Francois's Avignon Wine Tour of the Luberon Valley was the highlight of our trip to Provence! It was an intimate tour with a group of 6. Francois's knowledge of wine and his relationship with the wineries we visited made for an "unforgettable" experience. He introduced us to the wine tasting steps. I can't wait for our next family gathering to watch my Mom and Aunt explain the "techniques." We were able to see the beautiful country and villages of the Luberon Valley. The place he chose for lunch was frequented by the locals and used local agricultural products in their dishes. Very good and my Mom is now planning on making a vegetable dish called Tian. My reason for returning to Provence would be to go on another tour with Francois. He is passionate about wine and the region, knowledgable and funny to boot!! If your near Avignon - don't miss this tour and be sure to book way in advance!

If we had only enough time, we would have booked every single day Francois offers. Unfortunately, we could only book a Tuesday and a Thursday tour a couple of weeks apart. Although other businesses probably offer visits to similar or the same wineries, they do not have the crucial element - Francois himself. A sommelier and former maitre d'hote of fine restaurants, Francois brings the knowledge of fine wines (including those of most reasonable prices) and pairings to his guests. He takes his guests through beautiful, intimate French villages, perched on mountainsides and set in valleys. We think he could be called the Rick Steves of wines, or perhaps Steves could be called the Francois of Provence travel. We hope to return soon to enjoy a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or weekend tour and discover more provencal gems.

In Oct, 2010, we went on two one-day tours with Francois - one to Lirac, Tavel and Les Costières de Nîmes, the second to the Luberon Valley. Francois was, in the past, a senior Maitre D' and hence has an encyclopaedic knowledge of wines and wine making, But he also has the capacity to explain, even to wine novices, how to assess a wine. Whether or not you can remember labels, Francois teaches you how to analyse whether and why you like (or dislike) a wine! So whilst he knows the areas like the back of his hand, and hence is an excellent tour/area/scenery guide (and very safe driver), he adds the dimension of being a true wine expert (but never a wine snob!). Our group of 6, on each day, included both wine novices and people very knowledgeable about wine. We all enjoyed the tour AND learned a lot.

Francoise did a fabulous job with our group. He picked us up right on time and immediately began to entertain and inform us about the region and the wine. We went directly to Chateauneuf de Pape and stopped at a vineyard for our first lesson about the cobblestones and the grapes! From there we visited several wineries, ate lunch at a delightful hilltop restaurant then visiting two more wineries before our tour ended.

My husband and I highly recommend this to all and wish Francoise the best of luck with his future endeavors as he informs the world "about the grapes"! He is a great ambassador for France.

Enjoyed a fantastic tour with Francois, the wine ambassador of Avignon! We visited 4 beautiful caves, tasted great wine, learned a lot, including a new meaning to the Saturday night dance move, and had a superb lunch... This is an experience well worth the money.
