Once in a while you fluke the great pleasure of participating in an education with a professor who loves what he does. Today we had this pleasurable experience with Francois Marcou. A practicing professional of Avignon wine region. For us the opportunity was to travel with Francois f to the very special Chateau Neuf de-Pape wine region. He should us thru 4 Vineyards and at each found something 'special' to build and further our education of this wine region. The vineyards varied in reputation, but all where welcoming and unique.
After eight hours of tutelage under Francois we left Avignon a lot wiser about the region and a little more rounded.

What a fantastic day out. We had the pleasure of spending a full day visiting the wineries of the Chateauneuf du Pape region with the very friendly and informative Francois, the owner and guide of Avignon Wine Tours. He is very knowledgable, highly professional and great company. I have been on many wine tours but have never before walked away with such an expanded understanding of wine and how to appreciate it. He offers many tips and insights. I wish I had had the time to have done more than the one tour with Francois. Next time I am in Avignon, I will sign up for at least three tour days. The cost is more than reasonable - A full day of fun and tuition, transportation and a fabulous 3 course lunch and wine. It would have been a bargain at twice the price. Seriously, not to be missed.

Francois, the guide and owner of Avignon Wine Tours is professional, experienced, full of knowledge of wines and the wine industry with a great sense of humor. We loved our tour and the experience. We visited several wineries with excellent wines. If you want to buy a bottle at the vineyard, it's excellent value but there is no pressure. The tours have a maximum of 6 people, so they're intimate and there's plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

As a bonus we stopped for lunch at a local restaurant for an authentic and absolutely delicious taste of regional cuisine (lunch and dessert for about €20 extra per person, including a glass of wine, which is quite good value). It's worthwhile doing this tour at the start of your stay in Avignon as Francois gives a good overview of the area, and secret spots for restaurants and attractions.

We booked this tour on a Rick Steve's recommendation, and it was the most informative wine tour we have ever been on (having travelled through numerous wine regions around the world).

We spent the day with David, a French sommelier, who returned home to Avignon after many years working at high-end restaurants around the world. David was a wealth of knowledge, both of Chateauneuf-du-Pape specifically and about wine appreciation more generally. He carefully took us to the best wineries and hand selected the wines we sampled. We left feeling like we had tasted the best the region had to offer.

So we booked Francois for 2 days. His love of the region is infectuous. its really more than a wine tour. Its a great wine tour that celebrates the beauty and culture of the region. You may think you can do this on your own...but you will miss a great experience if you pass up Francois and Avignon Wine Tours.
