In France we generally try to avoid restaurants in the main areas as they are generally over-priced, but the Opera Cafe was a pleasant surprise. The elegant interior makes it a fine place to linger over a meal for a few hours. Started with two glasses of a DOC white with an escargot plate, followed by main courses of lamb and dorade with a lovely bottle of Vacqueyras recommended by the server. We split a dessert, a refreshing pineapple "gazpacho" followed by two glasses of excellent marc de Chateauneuf-du-Pape. All of this for around 120 euros--hardly cheap, but quite a value given the quality. The service was excellent, attentive yet unhurried in the French manner. The server was happy to discuss wines with us and even wrote down a few recommendations for us to seek out at a local bottle shop. A magical evening--and that's not just the marc talking.
