We knew we had booked something unique, but this place blew our expectations away.
First, it's huge! We could have brought 50 our friends and still had room to spare. The upstairs great room complete with sofas, a piano, ipod sound system, and cathedral ceilings could host an entire army.
Second, the location is right in the heart of Avignon in the pedestrian only section. It's an easy ten minute walk from the central train station and right around the corner from multiple restaurants, markets, groceries, and down the street from the Pope's Palace. You cannot get more central than this.
Third, the owner is super nice, taking over an hour to give a full tour of the place, explaining how everything works. She is very accommodating, especially as our group grew in size post booking.
Fourth, could be because it was Christmas, but the owner left us foot slippers, bottled water, and even some cookies. What a nice welcome to a home away from home.
Fifth, this is the most unique place I have ever slept. There's everything from hidden staircases to perfect acoustics inside the master bedroom where you can whisper in one corner and have the sound bounce perfectly to the other. We spent hours exploring the various nooks and crannies of the building... which we had all to ourselves. Again, could be because it was Christmas, but this is a 5 level building with multiple bedrooms, baths, extra kitchen, and what we think was a movie theater on the 3rd floor... and we had the entire thing to ourselves.
There is no doubt this is the coolest place in Avignon and perhaps all of Provence.
This 13th century Chapel built by the Antonin has been transformed into the best location for exploring Avignon City Center. Just as the monks helped those in need with physical and spiritual healing, the space here will do the same for you. Entering through a large wardrobe attached to the wall begins the mystery; seeing the loft directly above with the beautiful chief's kitchen, the fabulous views and lighting, we spent much time there. Yet downstairs is a spa quality bathroom with large soaking tub, spa shower and great towels, soaps and shampoo. Five star bathroom. The huge main salon has a baby grand piano (in tune) and several cozy comfort areas that makes the space manageable and fun. Then through another wardrobe to the master bedroom. One is certainly reminded of C. S. Lewis. Luxurious bed and linens, half circle stone bedroom with plenty of room and a mysterious sound amplification used when the priest gave his sermon from the spot. Much history here, but there is also the idea of what we don't know and that is sometimes more intriguing. The modern yet subtle furnishings are all comfortable; once you have your key you are able to walk the city and return to a landmark and that master bedroom. Our hostess made everything perfect with her help and advice. This was a special place at a special moment in our lives and Marianne made this happen. We long to return one day.
