“sadly disappointed”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

Although this hotel has lovely grounds and certainly has some character (we enjoyed a musical presentation by local gypsies), we were sorely disappointed in almost every aspect of our stay. The price way exceeds the quality of the accomodations and the same can be said for the dining room. At 5 start prices, one would expect soft sheets, luxurious bathrooms, and great service. Instead, the sheets were like burlap (really, they are made from raw linen which the proprietor insisted is deluxe in France, but we've traveled many times in France and have never encountered such uncomfortable sheets). The bathroom was set into an attic space and felt like a cave or a hovel. Dinner was unimpressive and astronomically priced. As far as activities go, I had inquired ahead of time to ensure that there were bicycles for us to use in exploring the camargue, but they brought out two broken bicycles for my husband with flat tires and broken brakes. In the end, I had to go for a bike ride alone because they had no bike to fit my husband (an average sized man). My son and I decided to go horseback riding. They sent us to the stables about a mile away, with no ride there and no ride back. It's OK, we don't mind walking, but at a 5 star priced boutique style inn, one would expect to be offered a lift to the stable for which one is paying an additional high price to ride their horses. The walk past angry looking bulls, through mosquito infested pastures was OK in one direction, but a little old on the return trip. We stayed in many lesser priced places on our trip through Southern France and Spain that made us feel much more pampered and welcome.

Dear mfginSF,

We thank you very much for taking the time to share your comments about your stay at the Mas de Peint.

However, it is regrettable to know that your stay was not as comfortable as it could have been. Nevertheless we have to insist to the fact that our sheets are branded Basque linen of high quality.

We are sorry that you felt our services high priced and that we did not live up to your expectations. Especially your experience with the bicycle rental is not acceptable and we appreciate your feedback as this is our best resource for improving.

Nonetheless we would like to point out that hotel transfer to horse ride can be arranged upon reservation and that this service is proposed free of charge.

The Mas de Peint is an authentic place where bulls and horses are bred and situated in a natural reserve with a protected fauna and flora. Unfortunately mosquitoes are an entire part of this highly fragile ecosystem.

We hope to give us a chance in the future to show you how great our hotel is.

Yours sincerely,

Patricia Bonca

Very peaceful location on a huge estate. Small number of rooms. Nice buildings. Friendly reception. So far so good. Problem is more than EUR 300 for an OK room without breakfast is simply not in line with the things provided to a guest. Outside pool area not very imaginatively constructed. We did not eat at their restaurant and also had breakfast someplace else.

This is a beautiful, peaceful spot in the Camargue. The large, sparkling pool sits next to a pasture with a friendly, native white horse, there to remind you that you are in the cowboy country of France. The owner, Frederic, was warm and friendly and catered to our request to horseback ride a little earlier than the schedule normally permits. The staff was very helpful with recommendations of what to do, along with directions. Definitely go see the magnificent bulls on the property!

If you pay up to €320 a room per night you'd expect top notch. But it was not. The arrival was great, we had a lovely afternoon at the beautiful pool. The lunch on the pool terrace was very good. But from then it went downwards. The very expensive dinner was made by a chef with a gazpacho fetish. Almost all courses were blended. The waiter gave us very tiny glasses of expensive wines of €11 per glass. Our room no5 was very beautiful, the room was large and the bathroom on an upper mezzanine (with no shower). The guests in the adjoining room had small children and had fun playing around at 01.00 AM, with very thin walls, and when they used their sink we could here all. We hardly slept. Next morning the neighbors left very early, as we could hear. After a reasonable breakfast we laid down at the pool: with small children yelling around. Again. We've liked the design, and rural atmosphere of Mas de Peint. But for a €320 we'd expected more, far more. Wifi was not working in the room. Made ample complaints to the reception desk, but to no other avail than: "thanks for being so upfront".

Room Tip: check for families with small children in adjoining rooms in the main building.

No regrets (other that we spent less than 24 hours there!) we decided to stay outside Arles in this secluded place. Lovely setting and great room, though I agree with some fellow reviewers there is some slight shabbiness-to-be-fixed (sink and sctraches on the walls). Beautiful nature and fantastic pool would cure all minor problems anyway! Definitely a place we will try to return to.

While many travelers would understandably want to see as much of Provence as possible during a trip, we had the flexibility of doing a few "out of bounds" locations during our recent three week trip in France and Spain. I didn't realize exactly where the Camargue was, but I'm so grateful we stayed here. We arrived in the small, relatively secluded area past the traditional lunch time; the manager and owner both made sure we had a lunch even though they were past serving time. The proximity of the property to the flamingos and white horses was wonderful. The swimming pool and surrounding area was peaceful and beautiful. We had the great pleasure of a surprise musical visit by the Gypsy Kings prior to dinner, which was amazing and fun. Little appetizers were served along with wine; wonderful. Dinner was great, the chef came out and talked with the guests, and it was a perfect evening. Our room was wonderful, well appointed and comfy nice bed. If you have the time to do something not classically French when in Provence, this is the place to visit.

Calm and secluded. Authentic and refined. Very helpful and efficient staff. Very pleasant dinner with nevertheless two observations: The price (€ 66) is overpriced by € 10/ € 20... The desert was rather simplistic (red berries and sorbet).
