“Not as nice as it looks”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

The hotel has pretty gardens, but the bed was hard and uncomfortable, and the water pipes screeched loudly. I didn't realise it was so far from the city - 15 mins taxi drive. Definitely not suited to anyone without a car. The bus to the city takes 20 mins and doesn't come very often. I think the website is misleading regarding the location - "5 mins from TGV station", except the TGV station is 10 mins drive from Aix-en-Provence.

This hotel was a superb alternative to the ordinary Best Western, Ibis, etc. and at the same price or cheaper, yet offering much more. Think French Fawlty Towers, but properly run. As others have said, it is authentic rural France, with all it's charms and foibles. This place is not for the fussy traveler, but I highly recommend it for the more adventurous vacationer.

The bedrooms are quirky and dated, but sizeable, quiet and very clean. The beds were comfortable and we had a great sleep. We occupied two rooms and both were extemely quiet after midnight, even with wide open windows.
The building itself is large and great to walk through. As a guest, you have the run of the place and it is loaded with rustic art and artifacts. The grounds are large also, with a huge parking lot that is locked at night (you are given an access code).

The three course dinner was simple, honest provencale food. Not pretentious but nicely thought out and VERY tasty. The outdoor setting was lovely and the serenade of the cigales just added to the experience. The place was packed with locals on a Thursday night (always a good sign!).
Breakfast was an outstanding value at 10 Euros pp, with very fresh breads and some of the best Americano coffee you will ever taste. We ate outside near the pool - perfect.

Speaking of the pool, this was the only real downer. It looked uncared for and probably hadn't been occupied in months. It was a nice place to sit beside but I wouldn't go in it.

We went for a very nice walk through the small village, out along winding country roads and through some fields. Very quiet and a nice way to stretch the legs after 12 hours of flying.

We would definitely stay here again.

If you are visiting Provence and want to have an authentic experience, this hotel is an excellent choice. The restaurant area is elegant and spacious with a broad summer terrace stretching around the pool, which in summer is a wonderful place to dine, especially given the delicious and original dishes on the menu. I stay regularly at this hotel for work, and always have a friendly welcome, which is so important. Rooms are of differing sizes and prices, but even the smaller ones are OK. In terms of value for money, you can't go wrong. I suggest taking the half board option, where the dinner and breakfast are included, as again in terms of value you get a very yummy and original three course dinner and nice continental breakfast (including fruit, yoghurt, bread, croissants and petit pain au chocolat etc.) for an unbeatable price.

Located about 15 mins from Aix and about the same from Marseille (and about 5 mins from the Aix en Provence Gare TGV) this place is well located. It is in the small commune of Calas; it has a rustic very laid back charm to it.

The food is excellent (as is the wine list); Staff were helpful rooms are a good size but do not expect to be waited on hand and foot because that is not this place is about.

It catered well for our two daughters (8 and 10) and they could speak pretty good English.

Overall we enjoyed our stay; good sized rooms and quite quiet.

  • Liked — Rustic charm and food
  • Disliked — Having to leave!!
