“Trip to Aix”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2013

This historic sight looms over Provence and begs to be climbed! Don't avoid climbing the mountain if you have the time and desire. Best way to get to Victoire is to take Aix en bus #140 out of Aix to Barrage de Bimont. Take the walk up the hill, about 20 minutes to the dam. Cross the dam and the pathway to the top starts about 100 meters after you cross the dam, on your left.

Follow the blue markings on the stones and in time (maybe 3 hiurs or less) you will reach the top. There are many steep ascents and these take some time and sure footage to climb. Wear your hiking boots.

The walk back is done with less effort. Reverse your path to the road, D 10, and ride the 140 back into town.

A great way to spend a sunny day.

“An absolute must.”

The Montagne Sainte Victoire is the icon of the Pays d'Aix. It deserves its reputation. Always changing with the light it is never the same. A small road climbs from Aix and after 5 minutes you have completely forgotten the urban hassle. It is surprisingly quiet, wild, silent. Its beauty is fantastic.

“Beautiful views.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

Tip, wear walking boots or shoes as the surface is loose sharp rocks. Bring water and a snack.
It took me 1.5hours from the dam to the monastery and that was with straying off the "blue" marked route I did go at a fast pace and the sign at the start reckons just over 2 hours which would be more normal. Watch out for the blue markers they are worn in places and hard to see.

Thankfully the day I went up it was about 23c so perfect temperature for hiking up a mountain.

The views are fabulous and you feel delighted to have taken the time to do this excursion.

Prepare, give yourself plenty of time and enjoy!!

Well, we didn't actually go up it, more drove around it and gawped from various angles: the 'barrage' or artificial lake to the west of Aix, the villages there (worth a visit) from up on a hilltop village while getting lost on the way to La Ciotat . . .
