This cathedral is filled with some wonderful art, sculptures and architectural styles!! They have a Roman style nave, a Merovingian baptistery and a gothic area of the building. Things that some date back to the 5th century! Wow that's old!! They have some beautiful sculptures of people out of the bible and some sculptures serve a propose other than looking wonderful. One is an alter like structure with a carved relief of Christ with the 12 men he choose , the apostles ! There's wonderfully hand carved doors and window covers as well.
They will let you photograph but I recommend not using a flash because of the damage that can be done to the paintings. To do this open your shutter or use a mode to adjust the lens opening. Many cameras now days come with that feature. You may need to play with exposures at home on your camera before going over to Provence to take these photos. Try taking pictures in a dim lighted area. Try different exposures to see which ones work well or not at all. Also go to the dealer where you bought your camera and ask for advice on taking such pictures. It's worth the practice and it gets you ready to meet the challenges that you'll run run across to photograph Europe!! And there will be many!
You'll love the beauty of this cathedral and all it has to offer! You art and history buffs out there will have a great time along with those that like architecture. Something for everyone. It's a charm of a church.

Living near Saint Sauveur quebec canada, made us visit more intensely, this beautiful church and we were not disappointed. There was even a barroque Orchestra practicing for the evening's performance which made the visit absolutely fascinating. the cathedral was built between the 12th and the 19th centuries and is an eclectic mixture of different architecture although it seems to be mostly gothic. the little street you use to get there from the main town is absolutely fantastic with all its little shops offering provençal items and nothing marked made in China.

As previously stated this cathedral is more interesting in the outside than inside. Pretty plain inside as a lot of the frescos have been lost.

Easy to pass this Cathedral by as it is on a steep narrow street. On the outside, it doesn't look large enough to be a cathedral but go inside and you are in an ancient building, said to have been founded b y St Maximin, one of people who is alleged to have come to Gaul with Mary Magdalene. Whether this is true or not, the church is ancient and built on a Roman site. There is also traces of a very ancient baptistery. Aix is a charming little town - with one drawback. There are no public toilets and this is a matter of local policy, to ensure that visitors use local cafes and pay accordingly.

A very interesting old, Gothic Cathedral. We found the architecture both inside and out quite spectacular. There is a small square outside and in front of the Church where there are periodic local markets held. While we were in Aix there was a nice little show of local art.
