“genial service, good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2012

We had a cheeky Mexican waiter and a friendly local waitress, who made our night. They were both patient and answered all questions with a smile. There's a raised outdoor section at the front, next to a fountain in the street. It was entertaining to watch people wandering past, including a brazilian capoeira troupe. The fountain tinkled agreeably.

We had tapenade, duck breast in a sweet and sour sauce, but not a Chinese style sweet and sour. It sounds bizarre, but was delicious. There was whole baked fish, followed by ice cream and a dark chocolate mousse. All splendid, with wine, for 54 euro.

It was a pleasantly relaxed evening.

“Those Who Didn't Like It Have Dead Tastebuds”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2012 via mobile

We ate there last eveing and though there were some tourists, most people were French speaking. The food was excellent and unpretentious served by the friendliest staff that I have encountered in Provence. I had escargot. They were prepared in the usual way with garlic and butter, but served in the shells. The waitress was very patient in showing me how to use the special tool to hold the creature while you dig out the meat with a small fork. they were somewhat expensive, but there were 12 pieces-twice the usual US order. For dinner I had frog legs, which were best I have ever eaten-lightly sauteed in garlic and butter. Tremendous. My companion had a double veal chop which was tender, flavorful and more than she could eat. They have an English language menu, if you need that kind of thing. I'm not sure I would have recognized frog legs on the French menu. The waitstaff all seemed to have excellent command of English. This was a real keeper. Hope to go back. The previous night in Arles we ate in the bistro of a famous chef. That was excellent, but Chez Grand Mere was better. Book or go early-it gets busy. 5 Stats

“mediocre tourist joint”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2012

Most of the food was without taste, some was bad. Waiter made a mistake on bill (to restaurant's advantage) and argued about mistake instead of just fixing it. Needless aggravation for a mediocre experience.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2012

Were sent here by our Hotel for a late lunch and liked it so much we returned for dinner a few days later. Most people seem to prefer the tables outside by the fountain but we chose the comfortable main room. The food was fresh and well executed and the service professional. I can't remember the cost...which means it must have been average and fair. Doubt you'll be disappointed.
