“Good location but impersonal”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

Very good location in centre of town, easy 10-15 minute walk from station. There is a small Carrefour supermarket just down the road.

stayed five nights to visit student son over New Year.

Booked online and paid discounted price. we stayed on the third floor

The hotel had more or less everything we wanted - after the first disturbed night - peace and quiet (if you are sensitive to noise and/or like an ajar window even in Winter avoid the side of the hotel with even numbered rooms as you can hear the constant hum of an electrical something on the roof opposite - we moved room to the other side of the hotel and it was fine)

comfortable bed, good pillows, wi fi, fridge, kettle (take your own t- bags unless you like vervaine or french liptons and only one of each is issued per day!), tv, ensuite bath/shower and seperate loo. thin smallish towels

HOWEVER

the hotel lacked charm and atmosphere. the stairs were dimly lit and there was a strange damp smell from time to time. It did not feel like a four star hotel - more like two or three. Only one member of staff was helpful and friendly - a young black man who was on duty some evenings - the others were polite verging on frosty especially the lady I had to convince to let us change rooms because of the hum - fortunately my French was up to the task!.

At 12 euros per person we thought breakfast far too expensive to even try once - you can buy your own croissants and take them to a cafe to eat with a coffee for far far less.

this hotel served it's purpose but I was expecting something more special and luxurious than I experienced from a four star BestWestern......

This hotel is in located in the centre of the city, and has a secure underground car park, useful for us travelling to the south of France with Christmas presents in the car. Those are the good bits though - the hotel itself was most disappointing. The receptionist was very pleasant, but the hotel (apart from the groud floor) is dark and uninviting, with no pictures or anything on the walls of the hotel corridors. The room was ok, but the fixtures and fittings were cheap and nasty - our loo seat was tacky, thin plastic, and the loo itself was crammed into a small space, just large enough sit comfortably on. The shower head was broken, annoying but not a show stopper, but the towels were awful quality, thin and small. I expected more from Best Western, what a pity I was let down on this occasion.

We had a good room, bathroom with separate toilet, clean, comfortable and a good location. Just one thing spoiled our stay. We had a problem regarding our booking (it was booked for the wrong month, which might have been our mistake, but Venere.com did not seem surprised and we got the impression this had happened before). As we turned up 3 months late, they charged us for the full 2 nights, instead of the one night no show charge which was specified. The girl on Reception REFUSED point blank to help us, saying we had to take it up with Venere.com, the booking agent, even though she admitted that it was the hotel who overcharged us. We rang Venere.com and they rang the hotel and spoke to the manager, who fixed the problem. The girl's rudeness and refusal to help really ruined our stay.
Also for some reason we could not get wifi in our room, but she did not offer to move us, and there were planty of empty rooms. We had to take our laptop into the bar to check our emails!
On the good side, the other staff were delightful, especially Jane (?) who served breakfast. She presented us with a slice of killer chocolate cake which she had made herself. She was bright, friendly and cheerful and really deserves a spcial mention. She was also the person who cleaned our room and she left a note on the bed saying "Good Lundi, kisses from Jane (?)" as she was not going to be working the following day when we were leaving. A nice touch!

Room Tip: If you need wifi in your room, ask that they check that you will have it before you unpack your bag.

The Grand Hotel is in a great location for wandering around the excellent array of shops and boutiques, bars etc that Poitiers beautiful old town has to offer.
Very good value hotel, excellent room of good size, well equipped and as expected spotlessly clean. The staff were friendly and helpful.

4-star hotel at a very reasonable price. Good facilities and very comfortable double bed. Conveniently located in centre of Poitiers with on-site parking. Helpful staff. Good brasserie opposite (Bistrot de Boucher).

we parked the car (underneath the hotel) just a few kilometers from the highway, and had a nice dinner walk in the city. The hotel is located downtown, very quietly in a patio- which ensures good sleep in the narrow city streets. Friendly atmosphere and a well-kept clean room+ internet- all we needed.
