“Check the room you are booking carefully”
Reviewed May 23, 2013

There were five of us staying at the Mercure Poitiers Centre for one night only. We had booked a suite, a privilege room both in the old church and one room in the new part.
The suite number 411 we had was very disappointing given the price and not at all what we had been told we were getting when we booked. We were meant to be getting 422. It looked very much like the 414 my sister had for one hundred euros less.
When I complained about it I was told that we had 15 square meters more but really this could not be seen and there was no real area for you to relax for instance watching TV because the sofa was facing the open shower room opposite the loo and the TV was upstairs where the bed was.
Also note that the plumbing got very noisy at night around 3.30 am.
If you want a suite, don't ask for that one. Ask for room 422.
My sister really liked her room but I can't say as much about the other people in our party who were staying in the new building. They felt the rooms looked unfinished because of the way the ceilings had not been decorated and they nearly broke their neck in the shower when they slipped.
The restaurant area is really interesting and we all enjoyed the harp mini concerto in the evening. Breakfast was excellent. On the whole, the staff were all very friendly with perhaps the exception of the manager. I did like the way she tried to explain to me I was wrong to think I did not have value for money with the suite as had spent the night in. She was off hand and very dismissive. Not the way to handle a customer. She might think about going on a refresher course on customer care.

Interesting mix of modern interior and old church while the church seems splitted up in floors and rooms, leaving original pillars and stone structure here and there. Don't miss Les Archives restaurant next door which is same style with excellent food.

Poitiers is a very tightly packed town on a hill, with few central hotels. The Mercure has an excellent location on a very quiet street. If you are an expert you can get a car in front to unload, otherwise it is 5 minutes gentle uphill from the Theatre multistorey carpark,to which the hotel sells reduced price tickets.
Much is made of the architectural features, but the building is actually a concrete shell at street level, and the majority of the rooms are in a modern structure off the west end of the old church. The second floor breakfast room has the clerestory windows and some low vaulting, the stairs are interesting, but only the expensive rooms would not be dominated by exposed concrete.I did not eat in the restaurant which occupies the lower part of the nave, strangely crisscrossed by leaning concrete colums supporting a keel-shaped mass of concrete which is the underside of the second floor.
My room was a low priced one on the nominal ground floor, which is actually about 8 feet above the street. It had a peculiar layout, with a bathroom area ,between the bed and the window, reached by two steps. The lower step,in a restricted space at the foot of the bed,had a hazardous sharp corner formed by two mitred metal edging strips.I put a large sticking plaster on this,to prevent having to apply said plaster to my shin! The walk-in(why?-room unsuitable for disabled) shower has no door,so that water reaches the bedroom carpet. The bathroom basin is also impractical, being a trendy shallow bowl sitting on a wooden shelf. It even has the added annoyance of having no plug or waste valve. The WC is in the position ,by the room door, usually taken by the bathroom. It has rough emulsion painted walls which are clean at present, but obviously cannot remain so.
Apart from these annoyances, the bedroom is excellent for sleeping, with a comfortable bed and crisp sheets. There is a small desk to work at,but no easy chair, nor space for lounging. The limited space, and lack of furniture, make the room hard to keep tidy.
Breakfast has all the usual items, and some local specialities.I think it is well worth the 15 Euros.

Room Tip: Odd number rooms on the ground floor have the inconvenient bathroom arrangement;the even numbers loo...

The hotel is built around a Jesuit church so is full of interesting features. However the cheaper rooms are modern but clean and simple.

The location in the centre of town makes it ideal for exploring the city.

The restaurant in the hotel is independent and very expensive even for breakfast, so we always went elsewhere to eat.

Surprisingly good for the price (but remember it's Poitiers, not Paris).
Great staff, beautiful rooms.
Key point: there are *new* rooms (totally modern) and *funky* rooms (exposed beams, etc).
The funky rooms are more romantic and charming.
The modern rooms are more practical and perfect in a neutral way.
I was here for work and preferred my new, neutral room.
But if I was here as a couple I would've asked for one of the older, remodeled rooms.
It's a gorgeous place and worth every penny. Highly recommended.
[fyi: spotlessly clean, perfect location, very quiet].

Room Tip: If you want a modern, neutral room, #205 is perfect. For something more romantic ask for the 4th fl...

I had reserved a suite and was amazed by the quality of the bathroom, seemed more like a Hyatt than a French bathroom ( no disrespect meant). Staff very friendly and efficient, great breakfast, excellent location. However please note it is quite a trip to walk from the Train station because you have to climb hundreds of steps to get to the hotel level which is in the old town. Once there however, the old town is at your doorstep... Very pleasant experience overall, especially for the price.
