Overall a great choice of place to stay in Poitiers. The location of this hotel is perfect - very central, but on a quiet side road so no noise. The building is really well converted, with architectural surprises all over the place. If you stay, make sure you use the stairs instead of the lift to see one of the most beautiful parts of the building.

Staff were helpful, and spoke English which we appreciated when our French ran out.

The room is the reason why this review isn't five stars. We'd booked a superior room, and whilst the bed was comfy the room itself was not. The walls are bare plasterboard (on purpose - fits the overall aesthetic, but feels cold), the en suite was behind a curtain in the corner of the room and the only place to sit was a padded stool or window seat which meant learning against the cold, rough walls. A bit more comfort would have been appreciated.

Back to positives: breakfast, although not cheap at 15 euros is good and there's lots of choice, and Internet access meant we could check emails, surf, and FaceTime our kids ( although not stream media).

Overall a good choice of hotel, and we would return, but expect a design experience rather than luxurious comfort!

We happily spent the night and some of the day here as part of a birthday celebration for my husband.
We chose it as it is in our nearest city, has reviewed well on TripAdvisor, and is a fascinating building to enjoy.
Mercure, Poitiers is a cleverly and sympathetically converted Jesuit Chapel. Ideally the restaurant we'd chosen for our gourmet experience is also part of this grand building.
Our room was a Privilege room which meant it had many extras; dressing gowns, slippers, toiletries, etc. I was expecting a little more luxurious, and hoping that we would be enjoying the high vaulted ceilings of the building.
The room was very clean (I suspect that the conversion and hotel are quite new, as places I'd expect to show grubbiness and wear were still pristine).
The king size bed was comfortable, my husband had a good nights sleep. The sheets could be a little softer for me, and I see there is another review about the "sandpaper" sheets.
Our room overlooked the quiet paved street, very little through traffic and noise.
The staff were attentive and helpful, reception was manned each time we came through and even though we speak French, the receptionist greeting us upon arrival was happy to speak in English to us. We'd arrived a little after noon, and were able to go to our room straight away.
We'd pre-ordered breakfast for the following morning which we requested in our room. Trays were brought at a time of our choosing (before 11am it being Saturday) and there was plenty of choice on the tray plus little paper bags to take away what we couldn't eat there and then.
Car parking was just a few metres along the street and for 24hrs cost us €5.
It was a very wet and windy day and we were pleased that we'd chosen Les Archives to eat in as we didn't need to go out into the rain.
We feel like we've been away for a weekend break and being so close to home was a bonus.
Will definitely be back, possibly for my birthday in July.

Staring with the positives: good location in central Poitiers, nice building. Negatives: bed was very very hard... (one level above sleeping on the floor hard), pillow felt like it had been blown up (uncomfortable), the sheets were like mild sandpaper, the towels in the bath are very thin. Inernet says unlimited but no downloading or Internet calls are allowed! The door to our room opened to a shared terrace - nice during the day but at night you were left with no airflow with the door closed and the AC is controlled by the front desk despite the illusion of a climate control in the room! There was also no safe in the room .. There was a safe at the frontdesk however, but we were made to feel like a nuisance for using it. It is a real shame because this could be a great hotel with just a little adjustment but they seemed to cut corners where guest comfort was concerned.

I was only there for one night, and didn't eat there, but I found it perfectly satisfactory and would return. The room was nice and clean and the hotel's location was perfect, with being only a few minutes walk to the pedestrianised old town. The lady on reception was very welcoming and helpful (in English). It has some interesting architectural features and was pretty good value too.

We arrived at the hotel feeling ragged after a long journey from Rouen and were immediately relaxed by the smiling staff and the atmospheric feel of the hotel. Our room was number 6 on the ground floor with a small patio area at the back where we could sit quietly in the sun.

The bar / restaurant area is an old converted chapel so you can have a beer amongst gothic arches.

The bar and restaurant are very expensive but by all accounts the food is good. The hotel is in the historic centre with it's cobbled streets and you have a choice of cafes, bars and excellent restaurants just up the road.

A word of warning, all of the streets in the old centre of Poitiers have been reconfigured so your satnav will go mental trying to tell you to go the wrong way up one way streets. If your satnav isn't up to date, just follow signs for the Theatre Car Park. Park in there for the hotel - the hotel has an arrangement whereby it will cost 5 Euros per 24 hours so it is cheap. It took us 1.5 hours to find the hotel!

Thoroughly recommend the Mercure - class and comfort.

Room Tip: Try to get a ground room floor on the left hand side because those share a private patio area.
