This cafe-bar-brasserie, owned by Geff and Christine, is right behind the wonderful Marche Central in La Rochelle. Here's the deal. Get a tray at the cafe, go into the market and pick out the seafood you want - shrimp, oysters, crab, mussels, ....., come back, have a beer and enjoy your table outside watching locals, or inside cozy and fun with everyone! Oh, the 3-egg omelet of ham and cheese is darn good too!

Stopped here as we didn't want to be in the touristy part on the port etc. It is a nice location, behind the local market, and was busy entirely with French locals. The service and ambience was good, but I felt a tad overpriced for what it was.

After visiting the great indoor market next door, we stopped at this restaurant for a coffee break. Lovely outdoor seating area at side of the road. We ordered two cappuccinos , which were very tasty and rich, but the price we felt was very high. The staff were friendly and the service quick.

We had a walk around the covered market and spotted a few stalls selling fresh oysters. We decided to buy a dozen oysters and some cooked bulots (whelks) from one of these stalls.

The stall will shuck the oysters for you and place them on a plate for you to take around to the bistro on the sidewalk just outside the market.

For a small fee the bistro will bring fresh bread and butter and a bottle of wine to your table. The oysters and bulot cost less than Euro 8, very cheap compared to the cost if you bought them at other restaurants close by.

It was lovely to sit at a table along the sidewalk, enjoying fresh oysters and seafood and glass of wine in the summer.

A lot of locals seem to have the same idea of ordering seafood from the stall and eating at this bistro. Service was friendly and prompt. Their plat du jour appears to be very reasonably priced (under Euro 10) and popular with the patrons too.

A sunday breakfast in La Rochelle is a little treat, before we have always had an excellent breakfast on the harbour front where you get a great breakfast, fresh juice, croissant, etc for under e7 a person. This cafe is near the market where we had just been, looked 'old' France, ideal. We ordered our breakfast, no croissants available, just part of a baguette, fresh juice and coffee. How can this come to e25.80! but it did.
A lesson for everyone ask for a menu if one is not offered! Ask for the prix first, never thought of it for such simple fare. No matter how old you are you, you still learn. Nearly as pricey as the cafes around the vatican.
