“Very chic hotel with helpful staff”
Reviewed June 4, 2010

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon, and I picked this hotel based on reviews from this very website... Though it's not downtown - it's within a 10-minute walk and the hotel is worth the price! The staff was very helpful upon check-in, they answered all of our questions, and parking was a breeze (we had a small car so it was not an issue)...

The room itself was great - not large, but very modern and the bathroom was huge! I enjoyed a bubble-bath both nights we were there... The breakfast downstaris had a good selection of breads, yogurts, fruit, cereal, juices, and other items upon request - worth the price if you're not looking to go very far...

This hotel was a good base for our daily excursions to Ile-de-Rey and downtown, and I highly recommend it if you're looking to visit La Rochelle... =)

Very modern, comfortable with attentive staff. We had top floor suite which was spacious with large terrace/balcony. Lounge area and two flat screen tv's. We thought it remarkable value for money. Only complaint was the bath was not practical and restricted hanging railsl. Good location only five minutes from Port. Easy parking in basement

The Masqhotel is conveniently situated although not right in the heart of La Rochelle. For a Best Western Hotel, its decor and originality are a pleasant surprise. Staff are professional and friendly and both check-in and check-out were efficient. Rooms are well-fitted, of average size, with good amenities and free wireless. An excellent choice in La Rochelle if travelling on business.

....I don't quite have the time to write such a lengthy review as the one from Aug 31, 2009, but it would suffice to say that this is the perfect hotel for a couple nights for visiting La Rochelle. The hotel is modern, rooms very clean and air conditioned, staff friendly, 5 min walk to town, and has an underground car park - what else do you need!

This is a good, clean, modern hotel which makes an excellent base in La Rochelle. It is about a ten minute easy walk to the old town. Just cross the road outside the hotel, walk down to the roundabout, turn right and walk along the main road.

Plus points for the hotel are

• Clean rooms;
• Free Wi-Fi in the rooms (obtain user name and password from Reception);
• Desk in room;
• UK type three pin electric mains socket as well as the normal European type one, both located above the desk where they were easy to get to;
• Tea/Coffee facilities with complementary bottled water and biscuits;
• Safe in room;
• Quiet air conditioning;
• Hair dryer if you need one;
• Nice big flat screen TV;
• On site parking.
• Helpful reception staff both day and night who all spoke good English;
• Non smoking throughout as far as I could tell. (There was a very narrow balcony you could stand on outside each room if you are a smoker.);
• Located in a quiet, safe area close to the centre of town.

Minus points are:
• The room is a bit minimalist and there is not enough storage space in the rooms, especially if there are two of you;
• The only TV channel that is in English (well almost) is CNN.
• The shower is in the bath and the shower screen does not seal properly so making the bathroom floor wet;
• Operating the shower was the usual intelligence test;
• Mains sockets in the bathroom and the hair dryer positioned so you could drop it down the toilet whilst switched on (Don’t EU countries have laws against this in the same way the UK does?);
• Maids that take from 11am to 3pm to clean the rooms. Instead of doing each one in turn, they seem to do them all simultaneously, thus taking ages. Annoying if you want to return at lunchtime;
• Don’t open your room window at night as mosquitoes can come in;
• Strange smell in room when you first returned to it;
• In my room, the shower was in the bath with a screen that came half way along. This did not seal at the bottom, thus getting water on the bathroom floor.
• Very expensive breakfast.

On the parking, the hotel car park shares an entrance with two other hotels. Use your room key card to open the gate. Swipe it through slowly. Call reception with the intercom if you get stuck. You do have to tell them you are using the car park otherwise you can’t get in (or out!). (If your steering wheel is on the proper side of the car and you are on your own, you will have to get out to use the card reader. Don’t take too long getting back in to your car as the gate will close again!)

Once in, go down the ramp to the left into the underground car park. The lights will come on as you drive in. If you are driving anything bigger than a shopping trolley, you will find it a bit tight. Also the lights can go out again if you take too long parking. There is a switch by the entrance to the stairs in the middle of the car park. It glows green in the dark. To find the entrance to the stairs, follow the big black arrows painted on the walls in the middle of the car park. Note there is no access to the hotel up the ramp or the stairs to the surface next to it.

The concrete beams over some of the parking bays are very low so be careful when you open boots, tailgates etc. You will need your key card to access the lift from the car park level. If not walk up the stairs to the ground floor and access it from there.

In the hotel the corridor lights only come on when you press one of the glowing switches located on the walls. The lights only stay on for a short while and the corridor is quite dark with just a few floor mounted lights remaining on when the main lights go out.

Beware of putting your key card near anything magnetic. It wipes it and it will need resetting at Reception.

There are lots of good places to eat in the old town along the harbour in the Cours les Dames and the Quai Duperré and in the streets of the old town itself. As in most places in France you can eat for between €10 and €20 per head with drinks being the most expensive part of the meal. Going away from the harbour does not make it any cheaper. If you just want water ask for a “carafe d’eau” which will get you a wine bottle full of tap water.

Check out the ice cream available from Ernest Le Glacier located at 15-16 Rue du Port and also opposite at 18 rue du Port which is just off of the Quai Duperré.

Check out the towers in La Rochelle, the Aquarium, the museums that have displays of automata and models and the street entertainers in the evening who appear when the close the roads around the harbour between 8pm and midnight.

I got this hotel for half price on a Best Western special offer hence I did not mind any of the negative points put me off. If you pay full price, these points shouldn’t put you off staying here unless you are very exacting as this is a very good hotel.

The Masqhotel doesn't deserve 3 stars .... it deserves at least 4 and would get it I would think if it served meals other than breakfast and room snacks.
A very good clean and modern hotel in a good part of town with very good service to go with it . Having a secure car park underneath the hotel worth its weight in gold in a busy town like La Rochelle.
Would be hard pressed to come up with any faults other than perhaps choice and value for money of breakfast. Ask for a front or side room , back a little noisy in morning as its adjacent post office.
