“Amazingly Preserved”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Found completely by chance under a Hotel, this is the WW2 Command Bunker and HQ for the Saint-Nazaire U-Boat fleet. It is a series of rooms with descriptions mostly in French of the bunkers war use. It even has the Officers Mess mostly intact with interesting wall murals. 7 Euro’s each. Very interesting but could be better advertised.

“Very little about the bunker”
Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

I was not warned about lack of English captions but enjoy struggling way in French . Really it is an underground museum with a good history of the war and La Rochelle . Exhibits are interesting as the art on the walls. But it is only in the last room you actually learn much about the bunker

“Interesting, but could be so much more ...”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

The U-boat command bunker in La Rochelle is only recently opened. It’s (obviously) an underground bunker, rather surprisingly situated in the middle of the town not far from the market.
Over the years, we’ve been to a number of these sorts of sites and this was just another one. It was interesting and some of the displays and artefacts were unusual (the submariners’ bar for example) but for me there needed to be more about the building itself and, perhaps, what went on their in its heyday, rather than a celebration of Nazi defeat and the strength of the Resistance – important as those things are.
As an Anglophone tourist, it was a little disappointing that there was nothing in English (we were fine, I can read French OK), but to be fair, we were warned of this as we bought our tickets.
Worth an hour of your time.
