“Smartish new riverside restaurant in Cognac.”
Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

L'Atelier is a welcome addition to Cognac's paucity of good places to eat. It's riverside location in St Jaques helps too, and the terrace and interior are well designed, with well spaced tables, a prettily planted exterior and good shade provided by smart parasols. The lunchtime food was good, haven't really sampled anything gastronomic yet, but apart from an obviously hastily prepared desert when they ran out of the advertised one, the plats were well prepared and tasty. Service was good, wine choice and prices reasonable too. I'm going back, it'll become a regular, if mainly in the summer.

“Lovely setting - shame about the service”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

The setting for this restaurant is ideal in the summer, with a lovely terrace near the river. The food was a little mixed, but there were some nice touches; however, the service and attitude from one of the waiters was appalling, actually telling us not to be so 'pissed off'. We complained to the manager who seemed to acknowledge that he can be aggressive! Would never go there again.

“Beautiful setting, poor food”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

We had moored our boat outside L'Atelier and had heard mixed reactions about the service & food but it looked very charming in a lovely setting but that's as good as it got. Me and my wife chose the set menu and it was ordinary at best my main course of pork fillet arrived overcooked and sat on a warmed up tin of peas with insipid jus, no imagination no flair and really disappointing. My wife had ordered the seafood platter to start but was informed shortly after they didn't have the fish or shellfish to create it so opted just for a main course of Mussels and Chips supposedly in a white wine cream sauce but all that was in the bowl was the liquid from the pan the mussels were cooked in and the chips arrived after she'd waited 2 or 3 minutes by which time the mussels had started to go cold, so not brilliant service either and there was only one other table sat and they were on coffee so i can't begin to imagine what service would be like when they have a few tables more, let alone full. Won't be returning and it's a shame because the restaurant and bar has been finished to a really excellent standard.

“Mixed bag”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

The locaton is lovely on a sunny evening and the waiter we had was very attentive, friendly and helpful.

The food was mixed, we both had the 25€ menu. The starter was fine, but my fish main course, although supposed to be a fillet was absolutely filled with bones and the skin had not been de-scaled properly, so was not pleasant at all to eat. My husbands fish was much better than mine.

The desert was nice, they brought the wrong deserts first, but i take some responsibility for that as perhaps I had confused things by changing my mind about my desert after the main course and swapping to an alternative. They rectified the mistake and desert was very nice.

OK, good location, mediocre food. We had the opportunity to return another night but chose to go somewhere else, which is perhaps a telling decision.

“Third visit, never again”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

After two visits last summer (see previous review 17/9/12 where after the second visit I was really disappointed), I was encouraged by more recent TA reviews to try the 'new chef'. What a mistake. Nothing's changed. Still well below average cooking for an establishment which, based on its location, offers great promise. My wife's second course was inedible, mine was utterly bland. We went with french friends, one chose the Bordeaux Clairet to accompany what we had chosen. We were brought a bland Bordeaux Rosé. We pointed out we'd asked for the Clairet, the waiter apologised and consulted someone else who also apologised saying yes, we should have been given the Clairet and went in search of it. A few moments later the waiter returned with the Bordeaux Rosé saying they were out of stock of the Clairet! By this time we gave up and accepted the bland Rosé. What a joke. After one year in business, these people really should be getting their act together, we will certainly be steering away anyone we know.
I repeat, the setting and the design of the place is fabulous, just a pity about the food. Maybe worth trying a simple salad in the garden at lunchtime, but nothing more ambitious!
Go round the corner to 'Le St. Jacques' for good honest cooking!
