Reminded me of the bar from Allo Allo. The property is aged to say the least. The toilet somewhat antiquated but the food is excellent. Very traditional simplistic values which result in a fantastic feasting memory.

A previous reviewer mentioned like allo allo cafe so very true ,we had the same thoughts , it is not just a resturaunt but an experience, never to be forgotten. To make the most of this experience arrive at 12.00 and be prepared for a long french lunch,The first time we went on a saturday, this was on the recomendation of a french neighbour opposite our gite, there were mainly tourists like ourselves, not english but french, they know a good thing when it comes to food and wine, and then we went during the week when clients where mainly locals, who I might add make you feel welcome even to the most basic of us french speakers. The food was basic but four courses for 10 euro what do you expect! ,mind the steak and pomme frites were to die for !
The real experiece is Jaques and his lovely staff who smile alot and pretend to understand your school boy french,Jaques who is such a lovely person ,when he finds out your english greets you as along lost friend! Jaques is in his late eighties but he doesnt think so! Back to lunch be prepared for 3 hour lunch and the wine which seems to slip down to easliy costs only 8 euros a litre. If you only visit one resturaunt in Saumur visit here we certainly hope to do so someday soon.

You find it west of the tourist information centre in Saumur. It doesn't look much from the outside but if you stand in the courtyard, where there is outside seating with sunshades, you can look into the kitchen and see it is very clean. Inside it looks like the cafe in 'Alllo Allo'. No two plates have the same pattern and don't let go of your knife and fork. The food is very simple, don't expect nouvelle cuisine. The owner and chef is Jacques, who is well in his nineties, but will come out of the kitchen to explain you get a fixed meal for 10 euros and ask how do you want your steak cooked. Both times we went we had a plate of delicious cooked ham and pate, followed by huge dishes of potato salad, beetroot salad, tomato with a delicous lemon dressing, boiled eggs in a tomato sauce and a never ending supply of bread. This was followed by steak with homemade chips. Then a camenbert cheese is left on your table so you can help yourself. The pudding comes in the form of a small tub of ice cream. The wine is excellent quality, 5 euros a half bottle. Every portion of the meal is homemade. They don't speak any English and every lunchtime it was full of very friendly locals, booking or arriving early is essential. We didn't notice if it was open in the evenings. They are very dog friendly and there is easy parking opposite the cafe on the carpark on the banks of the Loire. A cracking meal for two with wine for 25 euros, you can't go wrong. If you don't eat anywhere else in Saumur you must give this a try.
