“Wonderful Chateau.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2007

We found the Chateau on the internet, it turned out to be one of the most wonderfull days and nights of our trip! The Chateau has been beautifully decorated and the owners were so warm and inviting, it was like staying with friends. It's a short walk into the center of Saumur, and the people we ran into were very nice and friendly. We ate at a great Brasserie called Le Maupassant that had a very friendly staff and great food.
The price was very reasonable for staying in the beautifully appointed rooms and the great bathrooms. We will definitely stay there the next time we are in the Loire Valley.

This is Chateau Perfection! This property is IMMACULATE. Not just clean and nice but something out of "Vogue Living"!!! Do not bother staying anywhere else in Saumur or even the Loire Valley!!! The only problem is leaving and finding that your subsequent accommodation will never be as good as this unless you pay double the price!

The Owners, Yolaine & Thierry, are amazing in their hospitality, knowledge of the surrounds and attentiveness to detail. The rooms are stunning, including the bathrooms - and I should know as I ws shown ALL of the rooms - even the smaller ones - all stunningly tasteful. Their love for the property and what they do is evident.

We are planning to change parts of our holiday to return to this piece of french paradise. There are also 2 of Yolaine's brothers who also have stunning chateaux - see their website for the links - which we're planning to try.

Da Vinci's house (Clos de Luce), the Chateau d'Amboise nearby, dinner at Saumur;s "La Gambetta" as well as accommodation at Chateau Verrieres totalled a perfect experience in the Loire Valley. Beg, borrow or steal to stay here!

This was our first proper stay in a private chateau and we were a little apprehensive as to whether it would suit our preference for a good quality of accommodation and unobtrusive service. We needn't have worried.

We found the property first time of trying by following the driving directions downloaded from their website. The chateau is set back on a residential road, hidden from view behind high metal gates. It is quite difficult to see the entrance as during the day there are cars parked along the roadside which obscure it; but once you have found it the first time, it's easy afterwards. On arriving you have to pull up onto the pavement/walkway and ring the bell to be admitted. After that you are given an electronic code to come and go as you please. Inside the grounds there is ample gravel parking which is of course very secure.

On arrival we were immediately greeted by Yolaine, the owner, and her friendly dog Uno, before being conducted into the chateau and up by lift to our second floor deluxe room. The room was very large and well appointed with a view over the tree tops. The bathroom was double aspect with unusual tiling and a separate bath and shower. Unusually we had a kettle to make hot drinks as well as a minibar. One thing we weren't prepared for, but which is probably a feature of private chateaux, is that the guest rooms do not lock from the outside and are not numbered or named, although we could lock the door once inside. We weren't initally comfortable with this, but soon realised that a private chateau with a limited number of guests and staff is probably far more secure than a mainstream hotel. We were woken early one morning by someone repeatedly rattling the door knob, which we ignored. It transpired that it was one of the other guests who thought her friends were staying in our room, as we discovered later when she just walked in at a time when we had left the door unlocked. Not worth getting too stressed about.

The chateau has been immaculately restored to its original 1896 style and no expense has been spared. If you like the decoration of the period you will love it. Lots of antique furniture, fabric lined walls and plush rugs everywhere. We really liked the basement breakfast room, really light and airy and a superb breakfast choice. We met Yolaine's other half Thierry at our first breakfast and he apologised on behalf of the baker for the croissants being ever so slightly overcooked!

In fact the two hosts are very approachable and always available. They were always concerned with our wellbeing, asking if we had everything we needed, if we needed any information and offering to book restaurants for us. Thus we enjoyed very fine meals at restaurants we would never have discovered on our own - L'Escargot and Le Pyrene. Both are highly recommended.

The grounds of the chateau are attractive and a nice spot to read or have a drink. We also spent a couple of late afternoons in the outdoor swimming pool, heated to 25 degrees celsius - lovely!

Life at the chateau was very peaceful and relaxing, enhanced by Yolaine and Thierry's excellent care and consideration. We didn't see many other guests and kept to the very British way of nodded "bonjours" and "bonsoirs" with the other guests, although we were introduced to another couple which was a bit of an excruciating experience for all concerned. Dinners are sometimes offered for guests, although not during our stay, and we think that possibly if you want to be sociable and interact with other guests this would be the way to do it, but it's not for us. However with all the excellent restaurants within walking distance that's hardly a problem.

We would definitely consider returning to the Chateau de Verrieres. It is a good base for exploring the Loire Valley and we felt comfortable and well looked after.

  • Liked — The friendly owners and the swimming pool
  • Disliked — A bit dark inside the chateau, but that's the 1896 style

How nice to find such a beautifully restored chateau in a quiet area so near to the town centre. Our room was immaculate with views of both the gardens and of the Chateau of Saumur.
Nothing was too much trouble. Our hosts decided that the weather was unseasonably warm, and as our room had so many windows, it would benefit from air-conditioning. So a portable aircon unit was discreetly set up in our absence.
Yolaine and Thierry are very sociable people and excellent hosts, and it was a shame that they could only accommodate us for one night on this occasion...............however that gives us an excuse to return, which we shall do.

  • Disliked — Couldn't have dinner in the chateau on that occasion

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in May 2007. The chateau was beautiful and the owners were hospitable and helpful. The room was gorgeous, spacious and very clean. The bathroom was a particular treat—it was very pretty with nice toiletries and thick towels and had double sinks, a nice tub and a large separate shower with great water pressure. The bed was comfortable and the linens were nice. It was very peaceful and quiet with the stores and restaurants in town only a 5-10 minute pleasant walk away.

We didn't eat the breakfast—we preferred to go to a local bakery and café on our way out for the day. We ate at L'Auberge St Pierre the first night, which I do not recommend (so-so food and service), and at Le Gambetta the second night, which I highly recommend (excellent food and amazing service for a fraction of what you'd pay in a major US city if you order one of the 4-course prix fixe options that range from 25-39 Euros). If you plan to go to Le Gambetta, ask one of the owners to make reservations for you and expect to eat dinner for 2-3 hours (it is a very elegant and slow meal of many courses).

I would highly recommend this hotel, and also the town of Saumur as a nice place and a good location as a base for exploring the Western Loire Valley.

My husband and I stayed at this wonderful Chateau for two nights, and were disappointed we could not stay longer! Upon arriving, both Yolaine and Thierry greeted us at the gate and showed us to our room. Yolaine then made dinner reservations for us at a wonderful restaurant overlooking the river and an old church. Our room was absolutely charming, with every detail accounted for, from the crisp white sheets, to the wonderful fluffy towels, as well as the wonderful view of the Saumur Chateau. I enjoyed sitting by the window admiring the beautiful scenery. The breakfast is delicious, especially the home-made apricot jam made by Yolaine. But the best of all - the extremely friendly, helpful, and gracious host and hostess who made our dinner reservations and gave suggestions on where to go and what to see. After staying here, our next Chateau stop (in Ambroise), was a disappointment and we wished we had stayed at Chateau de Verrieres instead. We will definitely be back, and will
recommend this chateau to everyone!

This chateau was beautiful and comfortable all at once. The owners were lovely, the food was good (we ate breakfast there), and the grounds were immaculate. Even the dog was cute and friendly! I can't say enough about how lovely our stay was. The owners made excellent dinner suggestions, helped us with directions and sights, and were all around gracious hosts. I highly recommend this property.
