“Lovely family-run chateau-hotel”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

A lovely family-run chateau-hotel, the Chateau de Verrieres is located behind Saumur's historic Cadre Noir, an easy walk from Saumur's center and the river. The welcome is gracious, as are the public and private rooms. You won't regret booking here.

Carmen and I stayed here for four nights from 13 June. We were warmly welcomed by Thierry and Yolaine, setting the tone for a memorable stay.
The property is magnificent both inside and out and is splendidly maintained. We stayed in the Rising Sun suite which provided great comfort and a tasteful blend of cultures.
The physical attributes of this property make this a memorable place to stay in its own right. What makes this place particularly memorable and worth a visit is down to Thierry and Yolaine – their professionalism, hospitality and warmth create a grand "home away from home" experience for travellers. Highly recommended.

My family and I stayed in this hotel for a couple of day during July 2012. The Chateau is beautiful inside and out, and makes you feel like you're truly living in 19th century France. This is a good change for travelers looking to stay somewhere different from the typical chained hotels. The rooms are vast and beautifully furnished. The hotel is situated just a couple minute walks from the center of town, which is perfect for quick shopping or meals during the day.
Although Saumur is mostly restaurants and shops, it is surrounded by other beautiful towns that offer many great site seeing, such as castles, markets and museums. We would mostly just spend the mornings in town and then head on out of Saumur.

Some of the negative sides would be that the rooms could not be locked at any time. I found it a bit uncomfortable not being able to lock my door while we went out touring during the day, or sleeping during the night.
Also, we had original reserved a week long stay in the Chateau, but during our stay decided to leave two days earlier since we wanted to spend a couple days in Paris before we headed back home. The owners were a bit angry by our change of plans which is understandable, but they turned slightly bitter towards us and still charged us the remaining two days at full price, stating that it was too late for other travelers to make reservations and would loose clientele for those two days. However it was clear that they hotel was not at full capacity at our stay, so that argument was not very genuine.

We have just returned from a holiday touring the Loire valley and stayed for two nights at Chateau de Verrieres in the beautiful Chambre de General. We loved staying here and our car did not move from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning.

Having never before been to Saumur we found it to be a delightful town with a marvellous Saturday market within ten minutes walk. We also greatly enjoyed the annual Vintage Velo event that coincided with our visit. All the participants dressed appropriately with their wonderful old bicycles and penny farthings. There was so much to see and do but the great thing to us was being able to return to our 'home' several times in the day to relax and be welcomed each time by smiling faces and enquiries about whether we needed any help or advice.

As I started to write my review this morning and read the previous one I wanted to drive straight back to Saumur and give Yolaine and Thierry a huge hug. They could not be more welcoming and warm and are constantly making sure that all their guests are happy and comfortable. I have never met more generous minded people. I now wish I had taken a photograph to post here of the extensive breakfast buffet and we could also have had a cooked dish.

We look forward to returning in the future and are so very pleased we chose to stay at Chateau de Verrieres.

We visited between 10th and 12th June 2013, took 2 of the top priced rooms. Chateau is beautiful and rooms were nice and large but that was to be expected for Euro 260/290 per night. Small things were in my opinion poor, such as not even a complimentary bottle of water in the room, no little biscuits that one would expect at this level. Cheap wall mounted hairdryer , kettle with just a small tin with a couple of tea bags and Nescafe sachets, way too downmarket for this type and quality of accommodation. The breakfast was an additional Euro 34 per couple, again seemed expensive and should have been included for the sake of a coffee and croissant. The owners did not seem happy that we declined breakfast and went to one of the many local cafes all of which served wonderful cakes and bread. Upon arrival, we had been collected from the local airport ( 4 Klms away) by car and the owners made rather a big deal about that. When we asked for a return ride, we were told that we had not thanked them enough and so they had arranged a taxi ( BTW cost was Euro 10 !)
So all in all nice spot, well located but mean minded folks, we will not be going back

My husband, parents and I stayed at this hotel over a long weekend in May touring the Loire Valley. The hotel is by far the best in Saumur and one of the best in the region. It is a perfect option for those who appreciate history and architecture, and who don't want to stay in a soul-less chain hotel.

Though Saumur as town is a bit boring and not as beautiful as others in the Loire, the hotel's location serves as a very good base for touring the region, and is a wonderful place to come back to after a day out.

The building is stunning, and the interiors are elegant and warm. The rooms are beautifully appointed, spacious and very clean. The grounds and garden are also beautifully maintained. The owners are very helpful, friendly and hospitable. The hotel is also within walking distance of wonderful restaurants (we liked Bistro les Tontons and L'Escargot).

My only (minor) criticism is that our room was cold (it was an abnormally chilly weekend), and even though the heat was turned on, we couldn't feel it, and were quite cold throughout the night. Note also that the hotel has a "no room key" policy. I fully understand the owners' rationale for wishing people to feel as if they are at home, but I still found it a bit disconcerting leaving my room unlocked when I went out... but perhaps I have trust issues!

All-in-all a wonderful stay, and would fully recommend it.

One of the best places we have EVER stayed. Lovely, elegant convenient (once you find it) and QUIET! All the comforts are there in the bathrooms and both bedroom and bath are huge and well decorated. Our hosts, Yolaine and Thierry, are the best part. They treated us like friends from the start and were happy to plan our days for us. We stayed 3 nights in rm 307 and hated to leave. The room looks down on the garden and is decorated in red Toile de Jouiy. All the furniture suggestsw 18th C, and that is the room's name. We looked at other rooms when they were vacated and decided ours was the best! Other reviewers were accurate - the wi fi was iffy, but there is a computer for guest's use downstairs. There was a bad smell in the bathroom when we enterred, but when we ran water, that went away. Breakfast was very pleasant and the croissants were to die for. We would return in a hearbeat.

Room Tip: Rm 307 is very quiet and very elegant.
