Owner description: A symbol of the town of Saumur, the château is an old fortress that was converted into a palace by the Dukes of Anjou (14th and 15th centuries), including King René. It then became the residence of the town’s governors, a prison, then a depot for arms and munitions. In 1906, the town bought the château from the State to house its municipal museum, which has since earned the Musée de France label. A rich collection of decorative arts currently occupies the first floor of the north and east wings. Part of the horse collection, featuring objects from Antiquity to the early 20th century, is on display in the old abbey church. The château gardens offer exceptional panoramic views of the Loire and the town. In the summer, there are activities for all the family.

The chateau has recently reopened after restoration and now has some interesting diplay of furniture and porcelain on the first floor. The staff in the chateau speak great english and are happy to talk about the chateau.
Still not as well furnished as most loire chatea but cheap entry and great views.

A fantastic vantage point over the Loire and an interesting tour with some unusual artifacts and artwork.

Find you way to Saumur pronounced So Mure, and you are at the gateway to the Loire valley with all that it has to offer. Famous for its wines and cuisine, it never fails to disappoint. Even in the rain this ancient commune delivers full strength.

This Chateau dominates the town of Saumur. It is a bit of a trek up the hill to see it and there are excellent views from the courtyard. However, there is not much to see inside and very little information available.
