Owner description: A symbol of the town of Saumur, the château is an old fortress that was converted into a palace by the Dukes of Anjou (14th and 15th centuries), including King René. It then became the residence of the town’s governors, a prison, then a depot for arms and munitions. In 1906, the town bought the château from the State to house its municipal museum, which has since earned the Musée de France label. A rich collection of decorative arts currently occupies the first floor of the north and east wings. Part of the horse collection, featuring objects from Antiquity to the early 20th century, is on display in the old abbey church. The château gardens offer exceptional panoramic views of the Loire and the town. In the summer, there are activities for all the family.

This Chateau dominates the town of Saumur. It is a bit of a trek up the hill to see it and there are excellent views from the courtyard. However, there is not much to see inside and very little information available.

The chateau is in a great place from which to view the town of Saumur and the magnificent Loire. However, it is neither interesting nor has historical integrity. The restoration at the beginning of the 20th century was based on a fairy tale view of how a chateau should look and gives no real impression of the reality of the buildings history. Poor guidance sheet given on entry although the information inside the town's museum was usefully translated into English.

the castle is an attractive majestic building overlooking Saumur and the Loire. Full of history, as to be expected, but what it brought it to life was the excellent guided tour offered for free: do not forget to book for one when you buy the ticket as you can come back for it at a later time with the same ticket.

We liked the Chateau and town so much, we decided to stay. The Chateau sits atop a ridgeline running the length of the southern bank of the Loire. The Chateau will open for the season on 1 April 13, after renovations to the museums over the winter. The town of Saumur is gem, nestled between the Loire and Thouet rivers. It's very walkable and has a number of cafes for relaxing and enjoying the central plazas. Plenty of other sites in the town worth seeing too.
