“Perfect ”
Reviewed June 14, 2014 via mobile

We visited this restaurant last night as a treat on our two week holiday. It was wonderful; we ate the cheapest meal but it was beautifully presented and an absolute joy. The staff were attentive but not overpowering. It was so good we are going again next Friday as well. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Sue Dymock and Brian Ritchie.

“If you enjoy creative cuisine, this is a place to try”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

Well situated near the centre of Saumur a very pleasant restaurant. The welcome was warm and friendly. The menu is full of imagination, but mostly based on things we've seen/eaten in other top restaurants around the world. They try hard to impress and sometimes it works, but the sometimes
the choices could be better. Some may find it over complicated and too show-offy, but we did enjoy the meal and the wine selection is refreshing as its heavily waited to local wines.

“Started off well.... BUT”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

Hate to be the odd one out among raving reviews and would have given 2 stars if it wasn't Michelin rated. For a Michelin rated restaurant, this was way off. We are no foodies but we appreciate good food and wine. My partner and I had the menu... Started off well enough with a pre starter of sushi like salmon and ginger/herb soup. Bread was superb but apparently the waitress deemed it fit to ration it... She said to ask later if we wanted a second piece!!! That was a first for us in any restaurant! And of course we didn't bother to ask for more...The starter of foie gras with eel was creative but the fishy taste didn't quite pair well. My partner's main of salmon was at best a "decent" while my pollack was passable. Dessert was a total mess. Was recommended by the waiter as the house's more popular choice - cotton candy, Churros with chocolate dip, mint marshmallows, a scoop of ice cream, which I couldn't tell what flavor it was, and ginger beer! The theme was perhaps interesting... Carnival fare? But not in a Michelin starred place. The bill took forever to come. We had allocated 2 hours but it went way past 3. The French couple at the next table were each amusing themselves playing with their phones while waiting!

“Consistently superb”
Reviewed March 22, 2014

This husband and wife team have built a superb reputation. French cuisine at its best. We go there fairly often. From Chinon, it is about an hour's drive. Le Gambetta offers a variety of menus. This is a culinary adventure or gastronomic treat, whichever your prefer. For anyone who is really interested in food and wine, Le Gambetta should be near the top of your list. The wine list is excellent too. The rooms are light and airy. Tables and seating very comfortable. All beautifully done but not over top. Superb team at Le Gambetta who really understand their profession. The whole experience is a total joy. Michelin star restaurant and totally justified. Price range varies depending on the menu, but from Euros 25.50 - Euros 40 (not including drinks) and there is a tasting menu available. Reservation essential.

“Excellent food but disappointing experience.”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

We arrived about 5 minutes prior to our reservation time, and waited and waited and waited, while staff walked past us without even acknowledging our presence. We finally flagged down a waiter who seemed surprised we were there (although he had already walked past us twice). Finally seated, we waited and waited and waited. No menus offered. When we were seated we were asked if we wanted an aperitif. We said no, just the wine list please. After 10 minutes of being ignored, my husband got up to leave. At that point a waiter came over and asked if we were ready to order! Menus and a wine list were then provided along with an amuse bouche. After that, service improved somewhat but for a Michelin starred restaurant, we found it very poor. There was a water waiter pouring us water more often than a wine waiter pouring our wine. The food and presentation was excellent although sometimes a bit too clever. (Someone must spend hours combing a thesaurus to come up with adjectives for food) And while the food was delicious, when it finally arrived, after almost 4 hours of sitting there, we left before the last course. (We had ordered a 5 course degustation as we were quite hungry.) A restaurant like Le Gambetta provides a dining experience, not just a dinner. We felt the slow service and often aloof attitude let it down.
