Owner description: The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany houses the Nantes History Museum, displaying more than 850 historic objects with multimedia installations in a contemporary layout. The former ducal palace also holds temporary exhibitions and cultural events all year round. Besides, the rampart walk offers a number of viewpoints of the fortress. The night-time illuminations further reveal the architectural complexity of the site. A restaurant and a gift shop are as well at your service.

“Really fun to visit”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

We weren't expecting much when we heard about the castle but it was really fun. It took us awhile to get through the whole castle and there were a lot of nooks to explore. The best thing was that we could imaging life in the castle and the epic battles that probably took place outside the walls. They were very strategic in their building and you see exactly what they were trying to achieve. There were a lot of great photo opportunities too.

“A Must See”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

The Museum is an essential guide to understanding the history of Nantes. It is one of the finest city museums-in conception,lay-out, and thematic presentation. It is not to be missed.

Bring good walking shoes, the lighting is also dim in the first segment. There are multi-language audio tour guides available at a very reasonable price. Each room has a multi-language,large format explanatory book. Unfortunately there is just one book per room..so if you get stuck behind a pair of history nerds like us,you will get frustrated waiting. (Hint:the audio guides really are a good idea and value in understanding the exhibit.

The Museum runs to 32 rooms. No matter how pressed for time, don't skip the final room. It can only be described as an AV presentation of the history of Nantes, done in the style of a Gallic "Monty Python skit." It is irreverent and hysterically amusing. No tax payer funded museum in North America would have the courage to look at the past with such an ironic gaze!

“When in Nantes”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

It's a small city but this is one of its highlights (next to the Machines). Well preserved, it's fun to walk along the outside ramparts and see the city from the perches. A nice visit, especially when the weather is perfect. (Look for the big fish in the moat - they often will perch themselves on the shore to grab food if it's there)
