I had been to Nantes in 2008 on a business trip but as business trips go you never get anytime to explore your venue.

I wanted to bring my wife here as she has been to a lot of cities in Europe and Nantes did not disappoint us. The hotel was excellent for what we needed. It was extremely close to the city centre without it being noisy etc...

The staff at the hotel could not be more helpful. Anything we needed right down to restaurant reservations they did.

The rooms themselves were small but nice, we had a view of the castle and that was spectacular. Great hotel for a short city break but I fear I would get cabin fever after more than 3 days in a room size.

Let's start with the room...ours was not huge, but larger than many rooms in European hotels. Yes, it was a little odd. The tub/shower and the sink were in the bedroom, while the toilet was closed off in a WC.The bed was very comfortable. When we first walked into the room, we thought we would be perfectly comfortable for a couple of nights--and we were. However, there was a bonus--from our window, we had a wonderful view of the castle, and it was fun to watch the sunset and moonrise over the old ramparts.

We were able to negotiate a good rate, with breakfast included. (The breakfast was a typical continental breakfast, adequate but not lavish.) The woman at the front desk was very helpful, and the location was great for walking everywhere. In short, we thought this was a fine hotel for a short stay in Nantes.

We've stayed at this hotel several times and are always struck by how exceptionally friendly and helpful the staff are. This time, there was a fair in progress just across the way, which would have made out room at the front quite noisy (although the view of the Chateau was stunning.). The young woman on reception could not have been more accommodating, and suggested we relocate to one of the terraced back rooms on the lower floor, which was a good size and very peaceful. She was so attentive and warm, and really merits a special mention.

The rooms are spotless and comfortable with good beds, though elements of the decor such as the faux-suede curtains will not be to everyone's taste. Our shower was excellent on this occasion, and all the rooms we have been allocated on our various stays here have been of a decent size. We have always opted for breakfast in our room and found it to be of perfectly good quality and quantity. Off-street secure parking is available, though it can get crowded and will test your manoeuvering skills.

The location of L'Hotel is perfect for exploring the lovely centre of Nantes, and the Musee des Beaux Artes is close by, as well as the aforementioned chateau, which is definitely worth a couple of hours of your time.

We haven't found a reason to stay anywhere else in Nantes.

Very central location, walking distance to restaurants and shopping and sightseeing.
The room was dated and small. Clean however and housekeeping attended daily.
Staff were very helpful and helped us make dinner reservations and gave some useful suggestions. Try to get to the restauraunt next door, excellent!!
Breakfast was nothing to write home about, only the basic continental.
I suppose for the price paid it is good value.

If only I had read the other two reviews about this hotel before I went!

I totally fail to see how this hotel can possibly be a three star, it is two star at best. Whilst it was clean and the staff ok the room was tiny with several issues.

We obvisouly had to use a travel adaptor to get our own hairdryer to work and the only socket which we could use was one which was actually broken in the bathroom. All other sockets just wouldn't work with the adaptor. The one in the bathroom was broken and as a result I had to hold the plug into the socket whilst my friend dried her hair.....I'm pleased to say I was not eletrocuted, more by luck I think

The toilet emitted a quite disgusting aroma each time the lid was lifted......really not what you want after a heavy night out!

One of the very small single beds seemed to have some problem which meant that lying on it would make you feel as if your feet were higher than your head and giving the illusion that your feet were trying to head towards your head

The window in the room did not open more than an inch which was a real issue seeing as the room we had was apparently facing the noisiest street in Nantes in a room with no air conditioning

All in all it was a below average hotel and I can safely say I would NEVER stay there again

Some background...we stayed for 3 weekend nights on a 3 for the price of 2 deal.
Booked well in advance.
Location very central - close to Chateau de Ducs and Musee des Beaux Arts.
The 4 rooms that I saw were definitely not modern. The first room we were shown was a twin with the single beds pushed together. We sat in it for a few minutes before deciding that it would be too depressing to spend any more time in it, and asked for a change. A little attempt at modernisation, some mirrors, lighting or paintings would go a long way.
The second room I saw was better (a double bed) but had only a half-bath.
The 3rd room had a full bath, and was the one we eventually ended in. The bathroom suite was a green colour which gives some indication of the age of it !
However, the staff are helpful, the place is clean, and there is a good range of breakfast on offer.
The lesson learned is that 3 star means different things in different countries. If this was an hotel in Paris, I would understand, but Nantes is a provincial capital and we expected more.

Overall, I think it's worth a 2 rather than a 3-star rating. You couldn't beat the location, halfway between the railway station and the town and the staff were nice but the room we had was pokey and the disinfectant used in the bathroom made it unbearable to keep the door open. A restaurant right next door is well worth going to.
