We chose this hotel based on its favorable Tripadvisor reviews along with its reasonable price and were not disappointed. It's literally across the street from the Angers train station, super convenient for train travellers. The interior of the hotel is cute, just as shown in the hotel website photos, with what appear to be custom painted details on the walls. Our room was not huge but sufficient for two people with two suitcases; it included a small closet as well as writing area and chair. It was very clean and relatively quiet, as the window faced a courtyard-type area away from the train station. As a previous poster noted: the wifi access was not great from within the room; however, it worked fine down in the lobby. The receptionists were friendly and helpful. Given the hotel's central location and the relatively small size of Angers, it's possible to sightsee even without a car; aside from the old town area itself, some of the sites we were able to visit included Chateau d'Angers with its impressive ramparts and the Apocalypse tapestries, Cathedrale Saint Maurice (with an informal organ
practice in progress when we arrived), the Tour Saint Aubin, and the Jardin des Plantes. We wished we'd had more time to spend in Angers; if we have a chance to visit again, we would not hesitate to stay at the Hotel de la Gare again.

I booked this hotel based on other reviews and was not disappointed. It is reasonably priced and is right next to the train station, which is convenient. However, my wife and I were traveling by car and the hotel does not have a car park, which is less convenient. But, there is parking available at the train station. The hotel entrance is a little tricky to find as it is very small. You then have to negotiate a short flight of stairs. The gentleman at reception was one of the friendliest, most helpful people I have ever come across in staying in hotels. The room itself was good, if a little tired, but the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine. The breakfast was adequate and not too expensive. However, the free wifi was so slow that I couldn't get a connection in the room and had to go down to the lobby where the signal was stronger. We stayed overnight in Angers because we wanted to visit the Chateau and, in particular, the spectacular series of huge medieval tapestries known as the Apocalypse of Angers. If you are visiting this town this is a must see. We were able to walk there in 10 minutes because of the central location of the hotel. Very convenient. Also there is a very good restaurant next door to the hotel. If I were to return to Angers I would definitely stay in this hotel again.

Went to spend a week end in Angers and the Grand Hotel de la Gare is well located and the ladies at the reception were very helpful. The room had everything we needed and hand made paintings on the walls. Great Croissants and bread for breakfast but also fruits, cheese, yogurts, etc...The price on most week ends is really interesting and there are lots of things to do in Angers. We were really pleased and would recommend this hotel to all categories.

This is a great hotel without any pretensions whatever. It is a two star hotel which I would say was far better than some four star hotels that I have stayed in. The rooms are not luxurious, but are clean and comfortable, with a deal of effort made with the decor, having some quite funky artwork on the walls. The staff were exceedingly friendly and helpful, and made our stay a very pleasant one indeed. Want to stay in Angers? Well, you could do much worse than this very conveniently located hotel; get off of the train and be in your room within a quarter of an hour...

A reasonably priced, conveniently located (to Gare St Laud + Paris TGV with only 10 min walk to centre) 2* hotel in Angers.
Staff friendly and helpful.
An effort had been made with the decor (cheap but cheerful)
Room quiet, comfortable without being luxurious, and everything worked.
