“Gothic beauty”

Besides the Chateau and Apocalypse Tapestry, this is worth a visit when you are in Angers.

The stained glass which was well written up was exquisite -- there are are beautiful carvings and side chapels around the cathedral all worth admiring .

The organ at this cathedral is also very old and famous -- I was lucky to listen to it as the organist was rehearsing for a concert.

“If you like stained glass, you are in for a treat!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2014

Although this cathedral seems a bit unassuming at first, the 12th- and 13th-century stained glass windows make this cathedral a treat. Complete explanations of each window in the nave are scattered throughout. Take binoculars to see the rich detail in the windows.

At the end of May 2014, the west portal (1150-1160) was completely covered for restoration.

“More Tapestries!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 29, 2014

There are several excellent tapestries at St-Maurice and the stained glass windows are lovely also. Take a walk down the steps in front of the Cathedral and then follow any one of the paths off to the left for some beautiful sites of "old Angers".

“Very nice Cathedral - definitely worth seeing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2014

Other than than castle and the art museum, the cathedral is probably the next place in Angers to see. Very nice Cathedral; wonderful art, beautiful stained glass windows. Try not to miss it if you visit Angers. It is very close from the castle and there is a nice short route of narrow alleys between the two that I found interesting.

“National monument of France since 1862”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

Cathedral in Romanesque-Gothic style and unique vaults in Angevin or Plantagenet style. The façade with St.Maurice and his companions statues, has great similarities with Chartres famous Cathedral.
A lot of wood carvings. The Grand Organ is very impressive with the Atlases holding the whole structure. There have been several changes on the pipes many times and in 1957 the organ was electrified. The wooden Pulpit (1855) was designed by a priest named René Choyer. To the opposite side of the Cathedral, the High Altar. Its cupola is held by 6 monolithic columns. The stained glasses are particularly important and old. There are different chapels in the Cathedral and many tombs and memorials to Archibishops of Angers. As the Cathedral stands on a small hill, the view towards the city of Angers is beautiful especially on a sunny day.
