This was my favorite Fortress/Chateau/Castle...the history with Joan of Arc, King Charles, Knight Templars, and best of all it's not dressed up!! It is what it is. It shows it's history. The good, bad and ugly and that now it’s 2013 it has a chance to rise and shine for tourist and natives to enjoy. I really felt as if I could image how it was to live and work within this fortress/castle back in it's heyday. The coldest of the walls, the panic of the uncertain future with the hundred year war. The knights Templar trying to escape and carry on their duties...it's all there to soak in. You get a handheld audio tour and go at your pace. It's small but grand to me. NO gold! No grand bedroom! No bigger than life artifacts just you, the walls and your imagination as you listen to the audio. The grounds are beautiful great photo ops. Don't rush this castle, walk slow and feel the ambient air within.
The Joan of Arc history is told well in the rooms dedicated to her. She is a woman all women should know the history of. We seem to be losing sight of our world history. This castle brings its history back to the forefront and a very realistic style that I really enjoyed. Thanks for keeping it real and old.

This is one of The Loire's top history attractions and is well set up for visitors. The castle itself has been much changed over the centuries and although the fortress is not intact, it still packs a powerful punch. The interpretation is good although I'd have been happy to have even more. If you can spend a couple of hours, you'd be able to enjoy all the audio visual at the site which adds real value to a visit. At the time we visited, there was an installation on dragons (obviously designed for families visiting over the summer) - I can't say I loved it and would have preferred more detail about the chateaux own history, but I suspect I'm in the minority. Read up on the glories of the Plantagenet era and history really will come alive for you here. We were fortunate to be in Chinon on Bastille Day and witnessed a wonderful fireworks display from the battlements late in the evening which made the visit even more memorable. If you're visiting, check out the summer events programme. It's a good steep walk into Chinon, so don't miss the escalator up from the main square.

The museum connecting Jeanne d'Arc to Chateau de Chinon was especially interesting with many artifacts from the era. The dragons are a fun addition for entertaining the child in all of us. The viewpoints from various areas as you climb through the chateau are breathtaking. You can see the strategic importance of the location.

Amazing views, very professional set up. History simply explained in English, fascinating place with a dragon twist for the kids. You could get a flips into the past and a sense of the importance of Chinon to Anglo-French history. Great shop and tea room and kids stuff too and to top it all there is a lift to the pretty medeval city centre directly below! Kids went in free.

Great place for kids to explore. The fortress is imposing with a great view from the ramparts. My kids loved the dragons placed throughout the fortress, and competed to find the next one. There is a distinct sense of history here, and you can visualize the fortress as it might have looked in the middle ages. They have done a good job on the av presentations. The people in the welcome center did a very good job of detailing what we should do.
