“Comfortable and welcoming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2011

This bed and breakfast is a perfectly situated and comfortable accommodation in Le Mans. It is a quick walk to the old town and close to all kinds of shopping. The bedroom we had, la Grande mansarde, was on the top floor and was spacious and clean. It was also nice and quiet and there was a lovely sitting area in our room for watching TV. The sparkling clean bathroom was a good size and the shower was great. Mme. Duhem obviusly takes a lot of pride in the presentation and cleanliness of her B&B. The stairs going up were a bit tricky as they are steep and narrow but with care you will be fine. The hosts, M. and Mme. Duhem were lovely, helpful and very welcoming. They gave us a nice cup of coffee and chatted with us for a while after we arrived. There is free on-street parking right outside the B&B but there is also a free, secure parking facility just up the block if you so wish. There was an issue with the free WiFi that M. Duhem worked on diligently but it wasn`t totally resolved before we left. That being said, the WiFi worked at the bedroom window and outside on the patio. M. Duhem was very unhappy and spent a lot of time trying to fix the problem and I am sure he will have succeeded by now! I must say, though, that I thoroughly enjoyed doing my travel blog out on the patio in the evening! The breakfast was delicious and I always love the communal table at a B&B. It`s always nice to chat with other people from around the world. One thing....we visited on Sunday and Monday and many things were closed on Sunday and the Nuit des Chimeres does not happen on Monday either.

Room Tip: The entire house is beautiful and quiet so all rooms should be good.

A green oasi inside the city. Room was huge and lovely, decorated in a classic charming french style. Tv and all accessories you can need. Owners are both very very kind and helpfull. Easeful to the city: in 5 mins walking you can reach the old town. There's a private parking facility too. Breakfast was excellent.

I booked this delightful B&B as a treat after completing a 24 hour race at Le Mans... and what a treat it was. The rooms were beautiful and huge, the garden with pizza and wine heavenly, the breakfast with the newly weds quaint, but the absolute best thing about this place are the owners - possibly the nicest B&B owners in France. Can't wait to stay again next year!

Pass through the garden gate to enter this quiet oasis in the heart of the city. Getting to the historic area, with its many restaurant choices, is easy and just enough of a walk. A comfortable room and a wonderful breakfast spread of cereals, yogurt, croissants and jam made our stay so enjoyable, but the biggest delight was Mme Duhem herself. She really made us feel welcome.

This Chambre D'Hote was a very pleasant surprise. The room was large inviting and the hosts were very kind and helpful. The breakfast was also very good. Be warned Sundays even in Le Mans after the holiday season of July & August are very quiet. However the Sunday market was brill.
The only slight problem is, as the house is old, the floor boards creak and the the doors squeak so if you are a light sleeper it can be a bit disruptive. Our room was also on a main road but again not noisy on a Sunday morning and we were up very early Monday so do not know if this could be a problem. However for the centre of La mans and for the price it is excellent value

We arrived at Le Clos d'Hauteville following a day's journey from England. We were greeted very warmly by the hosts Mr et Mme Duhem and shown to our beautifully furnished and immaculately clean room (Glycine). A single bed had been installed in the room for our little boy . I was worried that putting a single bed in a room might make it a bit cramped - how wrong I was, the room was huge with magnificent high ceilings and delicate decoration - it felt quite regal! The bathroom was again very large and well appointed - the shower was fabulous with plenty of towels for us to use!
Once we had unloaded our bags and Mr Duhem had ensured our car was securely tucked away, we spent a little time in the charming garden - what a delightful place! We then headed into the city towards the cathedral, as we had been told about the "Nuit de Chimeres" which was taking place that night. What a fantastic sight - check out this site for more details: www.nuitdeschimeres.com
We returned back to Le Clos d'Hautville later that evening and fell into the biggest and most comfortable bed I think I have ever slept in! Considering we were almost in the centre of the city - it was remarkable quiet during the night.
The following morning we were greeted by Mme Duhem who showed us to the once again beautifully furnished and well-laid out dining room. The table was just as in the photo on the website and we were treated to a delicious continental breakfast (complete with a cup of English tea!).
After breakfast we packed our bags and headed onto the next part of our journey. Mr & Mdme Duhem wished us a happy holiday and waved us off from their gate - just like friends!
Le Clos D'Hauteville website is very well laid out and informative. The photos are very accurate - what you see is definitely what you get! Booking was very easy - a couple of emails to and fro and it was all sorted. We were made to feel very at ease and welcome by the hosts who spoke very good English (as opposed to my not so good, rusty French!) and would certainly recommend this Chambre d'hotes to fellow travellers.
We certainly intend to return to Le Mans as we have discovered it to be a beautiful and interesting place. On our way home, we stopped over in Rouen, which had a totally different feel about it - so, next time we head to France we will definitely head back to Le Mans and Le Clos D'Hautville!
Thank you very much Mr & Mdme Duhem - you helped to make a perfect start to what turned out to be a fantastic first holiday in France! We hope to see you again one day!

We came to this wonderful B&B travelling around in France to visit gothic cathedrals and spent there 1 night in August 2009.
The place is at walking distance from city centre and St-Julien du Mans cathedral, and there is free street parking in front of the house. From the street one wouldn’t imagine the quiet garden and charming house hidden behind the outside wall.
We arrived in the afternoon and we were warmly welcomed by Mme Christiane in the garden of the house, where some fresh beverages were offered us. The room (Discrète) was flawless and tastefully decorated, the en-suite bathroom new and spotless, with plenty of towels. The owners are very nice and friendly.
After a quiet and comfortable night we had a copious French style breakfast served in the charming dining room. I made no picture, but the web site (partially in english) of this B&B is absolutely reliable. The rate we paid was 70 €/night for the double room, breakfast included.
I definitively would recommend this B&B and hope to come there again.
