The Rouen Visitor Information is right in front of the Cathedral. It has a lot of great info and at the exit you can stare at the lighting of the Cathedral's entrance just like Monet's paintings. Then you can go in (free admission) and enjoy the beautiful interior (very similar to Paris Notre-Dame). I looked up and saw big cracks in the ceiling which amazed me that they were there for hundreds of years.

Notre Dame in Rouen is comparable to the one in Paris. Well worth a visit.
During my visit there was a lot of scaffolding around parts of the building. Steeple is made of iron and needed reinforcing. Typical, imposing architecture with awe inspiring interior.
Compare this to the modern Jeanne d'Arc church which is also centrally located in Rouen.

A beautiful building and it comes into its true glory at night-time when it is sympathetically floodlit

Wow, this magnificent Gothic/ Renaissance Roman Catholic cathedral is a must if you're in the area. Built around the same time as the Notre Dame de Paris, it shares many similar features. Construction on the cathedral began in the 12th century and continued for hundreds of years. Building had to restart after it was burnt down and struck by lightning, twice! And later again after the French Wars of Religion. It's an amazing history and it is beautiful inside and out.

However, our boys aged 5 and 9, were more impressed by a beautiful two level carousel just outside.

When you are standing in from of this cathederal, you can't help but feel awe inspired. You can see what Monet found so attractive about it, and see the destruction war brough to it all in one view. The cathederal is huge, more than many others I have been to in France. There are so many nooks and crannies to look in to, but most of these are off limits. The space is inviting and sparse, but very humbling. You can see where hot pieces of molten steel embedded themselves into the masonry, a leftover from the bombings which took place nearby. This should be your first stop when coming to Rouen.
