Best Western De Dieppe
Ranked #23 of 52 Hotels in Rouen
Reviewed September 11, 2009

Google maps shows the wrong location: this is directly next to the train station. Even in a "quiet, off street" room there is continuous noise of the street and/or construction. There is no AC or fan, so choices are hot with window closed, or comfortable with outside noise. And with the window closed, you can hear every door in the hotel open and close. The room is clean and well presented, of typical small size and relatively few amenities. Bathroom is poorly designed.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is excellent as it is across from the rail station which has a large car park. The restaurant wasn't really suitable for family dining but staff gave us alternatives in the city centre which was a 5 minute walk away. The hotel has a genuine ambience. It is distinctly French which gives a feel of travelling in Europe - travellers wanting a hotel which is part of a chain and could be anywhere would be disapointed! Rooms were as I would expect in a city but in need of repairs - our room had obviously had a damp problem at some time. The staircase has an old lift which reminds of films of the 1950's. Breafast was lovely - served in a snug bar area and was a typical French buffet breakfast - once again travellers expecting the same breakfast as served in London or Chicago would be dissapointed! Oveall a pleasant stay - a distictly French hotel - but then it would be - Rouen is in France!!

I stayed here for three nights in September 2006. The first night, fighting jet lag, I only slept a few hours. The second night I slept a few as well, and the next morning I noticed about fifteen red bumps, and thought that maybe I had gotten some mosquito bites the day before. However the third night, I slept a full ten hours, but when I woke up I had at least 200 bugbites, and after visiting the doctor, and calling my doctor back home, it was determined that I had run into bedbugs. The hotel refused to acknowledge the situation, and I am still dealing with the issue in the hopes that no one else has to go through something like this on vacation. I was not compensated in any way, and treated like I was making it up, or that I was the only guest this had ever happened to. I did notice in other reviews on this hotel, that other people as well commented on the cleanliness of the hotel. One of the signs I missed, but saw after the doctor told me to look for it, was the sheets had small drops of blood on them. So please beware if you are going to stay here.

This was our least favorite hotel during almost three weeks in France. The website, at least when the room was booked, wasn't clear that only the public area is air conditioned, not the room. Being near the train station, there is always some noise with the windows open. The mattresses definitely need to be replaced; very lumpy. Getting to the rooms is a challenge due to the very small elevator and depending on the room, steps once you get to your floor. The elevator opening is so small it's impossible to wheel in a 25" suitecase; had to get it in sideways. I also agree with the comment about the glass door to the bathroom; very strange and unexpectedly revealing!

My wife and I stayed for one night. Close to the station, but cleanliness was an issue, as was the tired state of the hotel. The strangest thing was a smoked glass door to the bathroom. Not only does that reveal more than you may want to know about what someone is doing in there, if you turn it on to use the loo in the middle of the night, you illuminate the whole room. Somebody wasn't thinking...unless it is some sort of strange "french" chic I don't understand. Stay away.

We stayed here for one-night April 24, 2005. We chose this hotel because of its location across from the train station and across from the Hertz car rental return. We reserved our room through the Best Western internet site at 87 Euros/night and in a follow-up phone call to the hotel, I was assured that we would get a non-smoking room. The very nice lady at the reception did have a non-smoking room, but she would be able to give us a much larger "smoking" room. I checked out this room (#26) and found that it had absolutely no trace of smoke and would be fully acceptable. As this room was small, I couldn't imagine what the even smaller room would be like. The room had two twin beds pushed together, a table with 2 chairs, a desk with a bench, a corner for suitcases, and a double closet with shelves & space for hanging clothes. The room walls were neutral. the furniture was white, and all upholstery was yellow & blue, giving the room an airy, sunny feel. The bathroom was quite nice with a lovely tiled shower-cum-tub, a large sink and a WC. There is a hairdryer and a handy plug for a curling iron or other personal electric item. There were two bars of a fragrant green tea soap and bottles of green tea shampoo-body gel. A sealed, throw-away wash cloth, shoe cleaner & shower cap, box of kleenex & wrapped plastic drinking glasses were the other amenities. The bathroom was well-lit with halogen lights. Wi-Fi access was available for a minimal charge. A word of warning: the hotel has a tiny, tiny elevator, so it could be difficult to get an extra-large piece of luggage in it. The hotel has a first-class restaurant "Les Quatre Saisons" which is famous for its pressed duck, a Rouennais specialty. There is also a lively, but smoky, bar & grill. I recommend this hotel if you need to be near the train station area, but it is a little far from the center of town. However, there is a metro station right there to take you into the center (about 1 km away). I'm giving this hotel an average rating, because compared to the Mercure Rouen Centre, where we also stayed during this trip, I found it to be a notch below in comfort, convenience, and location. The Hotel de Dieppe is showing signs of age.
