Owner description: The first thing you notice about the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux-MuMa Le Havre is its breathtaking coastal setting. As you approach the spacious, light-filled museum building, Henri-Georges Adam's monumental concrete sculpture The Signal heightens the experience, framing a slice of the maritime landscape that inspired many of the works in the museum's collections. Le Havre has nurtured artists like Monet, Dubuffet, Friesz, Dufy and Braque. And MuMa is a pillar of the city's art history. Inaugurated in 1961 by André Malraux, then France's Minister of Cultural Affairs, MuMa is known for its late-19th and 20th-century collections. From the Impressionists to the Fauves, the museum's collections have been enriched by gifts such as works from the studio of Eugène Boudin and the Marande donation. More recently, Hélène Senn-Foulds donated an impressive collection built up by her grandfather, Olivier Senn, in the early 20th century. Thanks to the donation, MuMa's collection of Impressionist works is today one of France's largest, and the public can now enjoy works by Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Degas, Courbet and Corot.

“Stop off on Thompson Cruise”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

This is a medium sized modern art museum on the sea front at the concrete city of La Havre. Good variety of the usual masters, with some surprising originals. We were confronted with several staff smoking right outside the main entrance, not the most welcoming greeting.

worth a couple of hours, if in the area.

“A lovely collection at just the right size for an afternoon”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

I adore going to museums, but most of them – particularly the larger ones – make me tired. Not so this one. It has some gorgeous paintings, but not an overwhelming amount. The Dufy and Boudin collections are outstanding. Most of the paintings offered the viewer an exceptional impression of Le Havre and environs. The entire wall of Boudin paintings took the viewer back to the time of Proust, particularly his Trouville works. My favorite Dufy responded to a poem by Apollinaire. There are other works and special exhibits, of course, but the impressionist and post-impressionist collection is really the gem in the crown. My favorite painting outside than the (post)impressionist collection is an anonymous Renaissance portrait of a woman by the French school. A visit to this architecturally stunning museum is a must during a rainy Le Havre afternoon. A real downer, however, is the English translations on many (I mean many) of the artworks’ titles. They range from incompetent to quite humorous. Maybe the translations were done by google or some other translation software. What a shame for such a fine collection!

“Pissarro's series port paintings of Rouen, Dieppe and Le Havre”
Reviewed October 4, 2013

included his last paintings done from an attic window above the Le Havre port; from different angles and in varied weather.

Can read French myself but the accompanying text wasn't translated into English, unlike the Rouen exhibition.

“Superb”
Reviewed September 28, 2013

we spent 4 hours walking through this excellent museum mid September. We arrived in Le Havre on a very dreary day indeed but this was certainly worth it. To see these old masters and the huge choice of painters was exquisite. Must say that having read some of the other reviews about the restaurant, I am glad we walked 10 minutes (rain stopped) and enjoyed a very nice late lunch indeed. Very much recommended if you are in the area.

“Nice pictures shame about the restaurant”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

A wide selection of mainly impressionist art mainly from the Normandy region very well displayed. Service in the restaurant was very slow, food average and price high for what you get. Don't eat there.
