Have you ever wondered if the people who complain about the little things in hotels return after their holidays to their own perfect home? Or to put it another way, what difference did it make that you were not cuddled by the hotel staff when you arrived? Or that you noticed a speck of dirt on the stairway? Or maybe the furniture was a bit outdated?

Isn’t it more important that the hotel had your booking right, that you asked for a double room with an extra bed in a no-smoking room on a particular date and it was all perfect when you arrived hot and tired? That the room was clean, the bathroom had hot water, and the beds made up daily for as long as you were there? And that the breakfast food was fresh and your hot drink replenished and the hotel was in a perfect location?

When a person gives a poor rating to a hotel for any of these very minor considerations, I totally ignore these comments, and all else being equal, I feel free to choose that hotel. There is nothing wrong with a hotel being “basic.”

This leads me to my hotel recommendation. The Du Dauphin in is what I would call a “basic” hotel in Honfleur, Normandy, that I will gladly return to if I travel again to that very interesting city. The price is moderate, the hotel is clean and the building, a XVII century structure, is located in the heart of the city. In this hotel, the staff is indeed friendly, but to me, that’s a bonus, not an absolute necessity.

In June, 2013, My partner and I stayed in Honfleur, with its harbour, its arts emphasis, its fascinating architecture, its many restaurants serving seafood, its strong Norman heritage, after a tour of the DDay beaches (which I highly recommend) a morning at the Bayeux Tapestry, a visit in Caen of the tomb of William the Conqueror. Honfleur was our walkabout and unwinding town after this (all done with public transportation). At the DuDauphin, we had a standard double room and can agree most heartily with the hotel’s own description, “ ...More than a hotel...a house...a cosy place to be. Every day, we make home-made cakes and chocolate fondue.”

I think perhaps that “cosy” is another name for “basic,” with hopes that your home is as cosy and basic as the Du Dauphin in Honfleur.

Room Tip: We were happy with a standard double room. Perhaps an upgraded double is more luxorious.

This was a lovely, clean and well provided hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Comfortable rooms. Great position right opposite the wooden church of St Catherine's, perfect. 1minute walk to the main restaurant area by the harbour. I would highly recommend staying there. We didn't have breakfast because we thought we would like to try other places. At the cost of 12Euros each it was a bit pricey. We did get charged 1 euro each for not having the breakfast each day though which we thought strange!

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the square and the church. We had room 24.

Lovely hotel in the heart of Honfleur, overlooking an open Square opposite St Catherine's church. Saturday market was interesting

Good accomodation, great location, although the (optional) breakfast was a bit pricey for what it was - best to eat out for a better choice.

We drove straight to Honfleur from the airport. Location was easy to find. We rented a family room for our family of 5 and and extra room for my parents. We had plenty of space and the kids thought the different levels were fun to explore. Bathroom situation was tight but the rest of the space was worth the trade off. My parents had a double room they were very happy with. Breakfast in the morning was very enjoyable. Honfluer is beautiful. I wish we had stayed an extra day.

We stayed for a long weekend (for Bastille Day). As this was our 1st visit to France, we were unsure about our lack of the language. The staff soon put us at ease. Our room was at the top, so we had to climb up the stairs as it is an old building with no room for a lift. Our room overlooked the cathedral and market square. The bed was so comfortable and the shower so invigorating(I live in Cornwall with very low water pressure!) Breakfast was served in the main hotel and was lovely.Once again the staff were very friendly and made sure we had all we wanted.
We would go back in a heartbeat!!

Centrally located so it is easy to walk throughout the town and along the river. Staff was very welcoming upon arrival, indifferent upon departure. Our room was smallish but quiet with a recently remodeled bathroom. No elevator so be prepared to carry your bags up and down as all rooms require a walk up and down a flight or two of stairs. Free parking is available at a public lot about two blocks up the street. Did not try the restaurant so can not comment on the food. WiFi available but did not work well in the room. Worked well in the lobby.

Convenient and extremely pretty location. With hindsight it would have been far easier to park first and walk to the hotel. Trying to unload, just two of us with one case and two shoulder bags, seemed to cause some local (i'm guessing they were local) drivers extreme frustration which they took out on their horns! Not the most relaxing of arrivals. However, free parking is just a 10 min walk away and we soon got ourselves sorted. Our room was in an annexe and on the second floor. Even though we were aware that the stairs would be very narrow and a spiral, we found it extremely difficult even with our one case and would recommend possibly packing a separate bag if you are only staying one or two nights. .Also the wifi doesn't cover the annexe. Having said all that our room was extremely pleasant and the view of the square something else.

Room Tip: Ask for a room no higher than the first floor.
