“Great weekend retreat”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

My fiancé and I decided to have a last minute stay somewhere on our journey home to the coast. We weren't able to get a room in Rye so chanced upon this beautiful Oast House, perched on Playden hill, high above Rye and overlooking the expansive Romney Marsh.

Downstairs is an old fashioned bar and restaurant, well equipped with a great menu. Upstairs, when shown to our room, we were pleased to have been given a room in one of the roundels. We had a round bed! With the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on! Linen was clean and crisp. There are pleasant views from both outlooks, east and west. The peace and tranquillity was magical after a week in pre Christmas crazy London. The bath tub was in the room, as was the sink, so don't book this room if you are shy! The toilet was separate. The room could do with some cosmetic updating. But for £80 a night we were more than happy.

Dinner downstairs was excellent. A fine terrine of pork, followed by fillet steak, ships and the essential peppercorn sauce. Again the restaurant could do with a little update but I could not fault the food.

Indeed, the same can be said of breakfast. All cooked to order, my fiancé had a huge full English and I had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. We couldn't move afterwards and it was a struggle to drag ourselves away from this idyllic little retreat!

With a little investment this place could be incredible! Please don't change your chef though!

Bon voyage.

Room Tip: Don't forget the bath is in the room!

We booked at short notice and had a very cordial conversation when speaking to the hotel. Upon arrival we were not disappointed as the hotel comprises of most attractive converted oast houses in a very pleasant location close to Rye. We decided to have our evening meal there and that turned out to be a very good decision as we had a delicious meal and good wine all at a reasonable price. The owner Rafael was very friendly and helpful which made us feel most welcome. We slept well in a comfortable room and were sorry to leave after a very good breakfast. This hotel is a little gem and we cannot wait to go back. Thank you Playden Oasts!

Room Tip: The "round rooms" are particularly attractive.

We stayed for one night on a business trip. We were given a lovely warm welcome and the staff were very friendly. The room was average and looked a bit tired. The shower and toilet were sufficiently clean but not spotless. The bed was comfortable and the room quiet, so we slept well. The only reason we awoke in the night was because the room had become so warm. We tried to turn the radiator off but to no avail. We ended up opening the windows instead!
The evening meal we had was lovely. Breakfast was equally good - very generous and filling.
With a bit of TLC and sympathectic updating, this Inn could be superb.

We have just returned from a lovely weekend stay at The Playden, it was a surprise weekend from my partner and I wasn't disappointed.
The Playden has character and charm, it is reflective of 3 star when it comes to the rooms but its clean and tidy, and was a comfortable stay.
The staff are fantastic, so friendly, and welcoming, there is a lovely atmosphere, we even got a lift into Rye, and picked up at the end of the night by Stuart, its going the extra mile for your customers that really stands out.
The food is fantastic, we ate in the small restaurant on valentines evening, and both enjoyed good meals, it goes without saying that after the breakfast you won't need to eat again till the evening!
If your looking for luxury, then this wouldn't be for you, I have stayed in some amazing 5* corporate venues, and for its charm, character and lovely staff this is a winner hands down, and am glad my man chose this for our weekend. We will definitely return to The Playden

Room Tip: Close to Rye

Stayed here for a weekend recently with my partner. It is as described, an Inn, so do not expect luxury. Instead, expect old country charm, rustic buildings and a huge warm welcome from Rafael and her team.

The room we were in was basic, but spotlessly clean and the bed was so very comfortable. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits are supplied, lovely touch.

The food was beyond delicious. My beef curry was sublime, my partner had marsh lamb, which was cooked to perfection. The chefs here really know their stuff and the full English breakfast set us up for the day. So much so, we had no room for anymore food for the whole day.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Rafael, Stuart, Mel, Pearl and the fantastic team of chefs. We had a lovely time and really enjoyed our weekend. It was lovely to meet the regular local customers as well, true characters! Planning to return early December for another weekend.

Myself and the hubby spent 2 nights at Playden Oasts in room 10.....fabulous room if you are a smoker as it has a fenced off private garden with a gate leading into the car park. The room was big and had an incredibly comfy bed....not the plushest of places we have stayed at but had personality by the bucket load :). The staff were friendly and helpful and the whole place just felt comfy. About a 20 minute walk into Rye and despite what other people have said about the walk back (uphill) it wasnt anywhere near as bad as we expected and we are no athletes!!! Rye is a lovely quaint little town (was like going back in time).

Room Tip: Smokers - Room 10!!!
