The three course menu at 17.50 euros was beyond excellent. Especially as it was on offer at both lunch and in the evening at the weekend! I would have expected to normally pay over 30 euros in France for the quality and standard provided. Within south Hampshire, where we live, I do not know a restaurant within my price range of up to £40-50 per head, that could offer a comparable meal.

As normal, we play by "the rules" and always partake of an aperitif and good bottle of wine. The Sancerre at 29 euros was truly excellent.

The main course of Skate was not a dish that I have experienced anywhere, apart from a fish and chip shop in Brighton some time ago. But the fish remains my wife's favourite and thought it was perfect. Although, I felt the sweet pepper sauce that accompanied the dish was under seasoned. So I am incorrect!

The decoration of the restaurant was in my opinion was a little startling, with its pink/cerise and light blue hues. But I am again wrong as the wife liked it all.

I don't know how long the couple have run the restaurant, but I would guess that it was not established so long ago, as the front of house was solely run very precisely by only the wife with no assistance. Thus, whilst offering excellent service it was clear that she was close to the limit, since the restaurant had 22 covers occupied of the 28 available.

The only failing that we experienced was the failure to read my email, in which we tried to book a table.

In summery an excellent establishment, my wife's favourite for many years, which deserves all the success that it will enjoy in the future.

The auberge is a between the train station and downtown and is very easy to find. Elegant and stylish although not pretentious the place was a nice surprise.
The food was simply delicious. We has chicken stuffed with apples and fish with asparagus and rice. A bottle of cider and some delicious tat in tart (warm apple pie with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream).
The service could just a little bit warmer but we would not hold this against the place which we would highly recommend.
