“Absolutely Lovely”
Reviewed October 19, 2011

I stayed here with my mother in September for 4 nights. We booked it for its historical charm, as it was owned by Monet and he used part of the grounds for his vegetable garden. The very hospitable Madam Etinault owns the house now and hosted breakfast each morning of super homemade jams and fresh croissant and baguette.

La Maison Bleue only accomodates one couple and the attic space was entirely ours, with a massive bathroom with deep bath, a little library area and a large french country style bedroom with pretty views of the surrounding hills and area. We enjoyed a little outdoors garden area with table and chairs for a glass of wine before heading out for an atmospheric scenic stroll up the main lane of Giverny past lots of historical buildings. It is a 15 minute walk to the Monet gardens and 5-10 mins walk along the main lane for the few restaurants in Giverny.

We really felt we had gone back in time to the early last century, as this area is really untouched, bar the very few cars that pass along. The main lane is blocked to cars at weekend but the side lane from the main road gave us access to the off road car parking at the front of the house and access out to the surrounding pretty villages.

I highly recommend this for couples looking to get away from the modern world to a place of peace, atmosphere, beauty, culture and history that is La Maison Bleue and Giverny.

The owner Mme Etinault made us feel very welcome and allowed us to come and go as we pleased without us disturbing her or her us.
This is a perfect B&B if you want something more authentic than the square room of an Etap. 15-20mins stroll will take you to Monet's gardens and round the picturesque village of Giverny.
The room was light, airy, clean and the bed very comfortable.

The room(s) comprise most of the top floor of an old house in the centre of Giverny, a fair sized and equipped bedroom accompanied by a large bathroom. As in many old houses, the floors slope a bit and the feeling is a little rustic though the rooms are furnished in a modern fashion and were spotless.

There is ample car parking at the house behind closed gates at night, for added security.

Though the stairs are narrow and the room unsuited to the very elderly or those that have difficulty with stairs, the rooms and the warm welcome from Mme Etinault made the two flights worthwhile. Mme Etinault gave us a simple breakfast of croissant, bread, juice and tea, coffee or chocolate and we had access to come and go as we pleased over our three night stay.

It is a 20 minute walk to Monet's garden and on busy days it is worthwhile taking advantage of that to be at the front of the queue when the gardens open at 9-30am. There are only souvenir shops in the village but there are a few places to eat during the day - fewer in the evening. However, nearby Vernon has more facilities and more brasseries and restaurants though once again some of those do not serve food in the evening and on Sunday, service in the evening is very limited.

We got by with limited french but Mme Etinault has only a few words of English though enough, I'm sure, to make herself understood.

We had a very pleasant stay and would readily recommend this to others wishing to visit the area.
