We stayed here after a bit of a disastrous stay in La Havre. We were thrilled as we pulled up and saw such a beautiful, charming place.

Pros: Rooms are clean, bright and airy. Front desk staff is extremely accommodating. Beautiful property. Nice location, short walk to the beach. They give you a shampoo, lotion and soap for every person in the room! WiFi worked well.

Cons: Not air conditioned, which is not too bad. However, you have to leave your windows open which means you hear every sea gull, every horse clip clopping (which I enjoyed) and every single gong of the church next door, which is at least on the half hour starting at 8:00. (Bonus if there's a service - it clongs for about 2 minutes straight!)

My husband and I loved this hotel. We got a big room with a double bed and a twin room for our teens, which wasn't very big (their luggage had to go in our room), but was fine for a short stay. My daughter was not keen on the place due to the lack of air conditioning and the noise, but the rest of us loved it!

Stopped here for 2 nights on route to Brittany. Double room was fine but single room was poor. No wardrobe just a rail in the room, very small but, strangely, huge shower room! Spend a bit more a book a double instead. The rooms were housed in 2 different buildings - fine as our daughter is 17 but could be awkward if you are travelling with younger teens. In general, hotel looked slightly run down.

Location was excellent with ample parking in road opposite. Short stroll down to beach and to town centre. The pool was lovely and there was a nice shaded garden with plenty of tables and chairs. We thought 15 euros per person for breakfast was too much so went to a cafe 2 minutes walk away for our coffee and croissants (out of hotel, cross road and turn left). We spent most of our time in neighbouring Trouville - far more down to earth and lively. Deauville is beautiful in a Stepford Wives type of way and although a convenient place to stay for visiting the Normandy coast, would not want to spend more than a couple of days there.

Room Tip: Ask for main building and a balcony.

L'Augeval is a gem of a hotel! I had a very pleasant and relaxing stay here, and service was fantastic, combined with high standards of comfort in the room. It is located in a quiet little quarter of Deauville, and its surroundings are actually very picturesque and tranquille, by a church and a little park. These qualities mirror the hotel property as well - quaint, picturesque and relaxing.

Location. It is not too far from the beach with its famous boardwalk and umbrellas (10 min walk?), there are shops and a boulangerie round the corner. It is very close to the horses, if you are there for that. For driving it is perfect as it is a quiet area, very safe, with plenty of on-street parking, and a great base from which to explore Calvados and Normandy. It is a long walk from Trouville, or a very very short drive. There is a local supermarket down the road.

Property. The hotel is housed in a very beautiful building, with original features and boodles of character, rooms are turned out to a high standard of comfort and cleanliness. The area around the pool, be it a very small pool, is really relaxing, and reminded me during the summer of a Provencal rural hotel, with wonderful stonework, a well kept lawn, and very cool tables and chairs and sunloungers. Imagine the water trickling down the water feature into the pool, the colours of the blue sky, pale stonework and green grass by the quaint hotel building, sipping a cold drink in the hot summer air. the inside of the hotel is also full of character and well turned out.

Facilities. Firstly, I would strongly recommend booking a Balneo room! This room is spacious and has a Balneo bath in the bathroom - your very own Jacuzzi! Well worth the extra for an extra relaxing stay. Some rooms come with a balcony, which is particularly nice if you are looking over the hotel's small but beautiful grounds. Rooms come with the usual TV and minibar, desk, chairs etc. There is a restaurant. I didn't go for breakfast as it was a bit pricey, though typical price for hotel brekkie, and there is a boulangerie round the corner. I had such a relaxing time, and Deauville is such a quiet town, that I did order dinner with room service one night. Food was good quality, good portion size, adequate quality for cooked snacks, and fairly modestly priced. The actual restaurant is supposed to be pretty good and I would be interested to eat there another time. There are also additional facilities - free ones include the 'gym' (damn that is not good for even a hotel gym) and ping pong table, paying ones include sauna and massage therapy. Also near the front there are fitness installations in a park, which can be integrated into a run for a full body workout. In terms of mobility issues, the hotel's original build design, full of steps and narrow passageways, is navigated by excellent lift locations which make all areas of the hotel accessible with step-free access, I believe, but check before booking.

Staff. Very friendly, though perhaps that was because I spoke French and knew a bit about the north of France, but I think if you are pleasant and friendly, you would get the same response from them. Sometimes your opinion of a hotel hinges on the service from staff, and here L'Augeval excelled. Great team. There is also lots of activities and services you can order from the hotel and a myriad of trips and excursions offered. And they are happy to talk to you about the area and things to do.

Cost. L'Augeval is a little on the pricey side for a north France sleepy tourist town, be it one that tailors to the elite with big Casinos and boutique shops. It is reasonably priced for what you get, but some of the additional extras you are paying for are not really up to the billing (eg the gym). But the hotel offers quality and comfortability in a relaxed setting, which I think is worth the extra. But I do think it hinges on the Balneo for me! Not to have it would be enough to sway me to a competitor perhaps, or a cheaper option at least.

Warnings. There is not much around really - a couple restaurants, a boulangerie, couple of shops, one tabac and one trendy bar with odd opening times. And although you can walk to Trouville or more restaurants in Deauville, they are a long walk away. Which for some would have to be a drive. So bear that in mind if it is an issue. Alternatively the hotel had an excellent menu for dinner.

Overall. Firstly I should mention that Deauville, if you've never been there before, is quiet. It is sprawling and mostly residential, and a 'heart' is difficult to pin-point - particularly so at night. But Trouville has a wealth of restaurants and bars, which makes it more accessible to the average tourist. For this reason, places like the Ibis or Mercure by the marina offer better location. But L'Augeval's quiet location magnifies the relaxing qualities of the hotel.

In summary, although I may be pushed to recommend Deauville to anyone, particularly given Trouville's more touristy amenities, and the other options in Normandy and around, L'Augeval is a wonderful hotel if you are going there. It is close to the beach, the Casino, and is a good base for walking around the towns, and offers a quaint, quiet sanctuary in a picturesque property, with excellent amenities, and terrific customer service from friendly staff and management. In fact, it makes staying in Deauville worth it, and for that reason I will definitely return in the future! And do recommend to friends.

Many thanks L'Augeval!

Room Tip: Pay extra, go Balneo! Some rooms will be better than others, I can't say which, but I enjoyed o...

We booked a last-minute mini-break to Deauville, one of my favourite towns, and since I always stayed at a crappy hotel while staying there during the film festival, we picked this hotel at more or less random. Here were some of the things we liked about it:

- brilliant location, a few hundred meters from the beach, short pleasant walk to town centre
- good pool, with baby pool for kids
- jacuzzi in the bathtub
- good water pressure
- balcony (where you can smoke)
- lovely tables in the garden
- helpful staff
- decent breakfast (not the cheapest in town, but not the most expensive either)

I would definitely pick this hotel again when we return to Deauville, which we will as soon as humanly possible!

Room Tip: Rooms 202 and 203 are up one floor but there's a lift. Try to get a room in the main building!

A hotel worth recommending, nothing wrong with it - in fact quite nice although it could improve on points. However, rates are on the high side considering value for money.

We had a room with a small balcony, bathroom with a jacuzzi and it was all just lovely.

Why emphasize the down side then? After leaving Deauville we headed for St. Malo and the hotel there was brand new and modern, much more comfortable and excellently equipped... Pure luxury compared to l'Augeval at 23% lower rate.

The hotel has a lot of character, which implicates great surroundings, characteristic building, and perhaps less than modern room interior.
The location is great, only a few minutes walk from the city centre and free and spacious parking on the street or the churches parking.
The room interior might feel a bit outdated (characteristic), the hotel is really well organized. The breakfast is very good (lots of choice and fresh), there is a pool and nice sitting area. All you expect from a hotel is available (very fast and stable Wifi).
We had a nice stay!

My first time to this region and traveled together with a group of 5. The service, rooms and breakfast were impressingly of high standard. Almost as good as a 5 star Hotel. A quiet and intemate hotel. Keep it up and merci.

Room Tip: room at the back of the hotel seems more quiet.
