“Great hotel in a fascinating seaside town”
Reviewed September 2, 2008

We stayed for three nights at the Royal Barriere and would thoroughly recommend it. The hotel is around 10 minutes walk from the centre of Deauville; overlooking the beach, it has a prime location. We particularly liked:

1. Absolutely fantastic selection of food at breakfast. We especially enjoyed the pancakes with individual jars of maple syrup, but there was a huge range to choose from.
2. You can have an hour's free tennis per day and also a free round of crazy golf (both located between the hotel and the beach).
3. We had a nice meal one evening in the bar (although didn't try the restaurant for dinner).
4. Only a few minutes from the main casino in Deauville, and you get a free drink in the Casino if you are staying at the hotel (obviously offered to get you gambling...).
5. The (outdoor) swimming pool was heated to a good temperature on the sunny days (i.e. when most would want to use it to relax in).
6. Valet parking was quick and easy.

We were less keen on:
1. Our room was a bit hot (the weather was very humid whilst we were there) and not air conditioned. We had to ask for a portable fan.
2. There was only one full-length mirror in the bedroom, and this was in a wardrobe to which the door didn't open fully without moving a bedside table. Slightly trivial issue, but it is nice to see what you are wearing before heading out to the Casino!
3. The swimming pool wasn't heated on a rainy day (yes, we did want to use it then as well).
4. More seriously, they charge you to use the sun loungers which is extortionate. Most of them are empty.

Deauville itself is excellently located to explore Normandy. We had day trips to the D-Day beaches and Honfleur, and found it an interesting part of the world in which to spend a short break. Deauville is a lovely town and totally unlike any seaside resort we had experienced in the UK (when was the last time you saw a Louis Vuitton store in Skegness?).

11 of us stayed here for 6 nights from the 1st of July including children. When we arrived we went outside to the pool area for lunch. The childrens burgers were 24 euros each and inedible. We didnt sit at the pool because the beds were 20 euros each to rent. There were only 3 people sitting out. One night we ordered 4 beers, a gin & tonic & a brandy.....it was 182 euros. My point is its very very expensive !
The hotel is very beautiful and the town is stunning but you need to remortgage before going. Hotel has no air conditioning which can be a drawback. Some of the staff do not speak any english and others are very aloof and standoffish. Do not upgrade as Cassic rooms are as good as Deluxe rooms.
Overall i would only recommend this hotel to lottery winners who wish to be on their own and ignored.

The Royal Barriere is from a bygone era, and while it was fun to visit, I would have preferred it to have lived up to what it might have been in the past. We got a good rate through a reseller, about half again as much as we would have paid at the Mercure. We had a beautiful view from our room, overlooking the beachfront (there is a pool, exposition areas, and low buildings in front of the hotel; the water is some distance away). The room was very pleasant and clean.

But the hotel's age shows in gentle ways. The floors are uneven, doors don't close, soundproofing is not the best. The bed seemed hard and a bit lumpy. The clientele seems to be made up mostly of rather tough-looking men from all corners of the globe. And there are all sorts of extra charges for internet, for example, although parking was free. Barriere's logo graces this hotel, the casino, the Normandy, the beachfront bars, and tennis courts-- the net effect is not one of elegance, but of desperate tawdriness.

The restaurant was wonderful, and expensive-- it definitely deserved its michelin star. The breakfast, however, was a disappointing buffet that had the beneficial effect of forcing us to enjoy the cafes around downtown on other mornings.

This was a rally nice hotel. We were spending 2 nights in the Normandy region and I had to find a town and a hotel that would be suitable for our trip. After much research I decided upon the Royal Barriere and was not disappointed. The rooms were large and quaint at the same time. It felt clean but was a little worn. It might be time for new carpeting??? The bathrooms were wonderful—no complaints there. The lobby was gorgeous; however the restaurant was over priced. We opted to walk to the cute little restaurants in town. One little tea house that we fell in love with was the Du Pont. We had breakfast there and also stopped for coffee during our shopping times. We drove over to Omaha Beach and also to a few of the small towns. We loved Deauville, and Honfleur. They were very beautiful and picturesque.

  • Liked — The location
  • Disliked — Had to wait to long for luggage to be brought to room.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for five nights in September of 2007 as part of a business retreat. We stayed in an ocean-front room that was gorgeous. The doors opened to an ocean breeze and could be open the entire week. The weather was gorgeous that time of year, with only sun and warm temperatures. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and spoke great English. Of course the food and the drinks were pricey, but it was well worth the experience! The hotel was located centrally to many places to eat and shop, and without a rental car that was great. I would love the chance to stay at this hotel again!

Some of these other reviews on the royal barriere make me wonder whether there is another Royal in Deauville because the one i stayed in has to be by far the worst luxury hotel i have ever stayed in. Where do i start , the decor is stuck in the 20th century it is screaming out for a massive renovation, The staff are pleasant enough and i would say some of them are very good, although i once had to wait 40 minutes for an omelete and in High summer when it is fairly busy i waited over 10 minutes for an Expresso on more than one ocassion. The food in the hotel is good but not worth the money, and in the Breakfast you have to pick carefully because some food on offer is appaling (the fruit salad is not fresh) and whatever you do don,t order toast unless you want to wait 15 minutes + and i will not even mention the fried eggs i am still waiting for them !
The pool is pleasant but small, but don't dare lie on a sun lounger they will charge you an extra 15 Euros for that luxury, outrageous. The gym is the size of a sauna and the sauna is the size of phone box, The room service overnight is efficient but limited and don, t use the Blanchissrie, laundry to you and me, they will discoulor and shrink your clothes. The is no air con but then again for a hotel stuck in time thats is expected im surprised there is a TV. And for those of you thinking nevermind i will stay in the Normandy, i would not advise it either, i had a meeting there on evening and spent the whole night itchy, there is dogs evreywhere they even have a dog menu, the place is full of mites !!! Anyway back to the matter in hand. In short if your over 85 love horribie dated furniture, not particurlaly good food and enjoy paying over the odds the Royal is for you !!!!

We got a great deal through Expedia (three nights for the price of two) and loved it! Not a full sea-front view - but a "side-view" which in fact gave an excellent view of the sea, beach, coast line (for miles) and the hills behind. Excellent service - from arrival to departure. Eating and drinking in the hotel is expensive, but like others we found that La Flambee restaurant is an excellent place just down the road.
