“Grand Hotel in Deauville”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Superb grande hotel with impeccable credentials next to the casino. The Royal offers its guests a luxurious stay in its environs with friendly multilingual staff. The entrance is regal , opulent and extremely welcoming . Staff are courteous and willing to help at all times. We stayed for 3 nights may 2013 with breakfast included. The breakfast is in the main restaurant and is beautiful to look at in red and gold with huge swags and tail curtain overlooking the sea front with gardens. The breakfast was fabulous with ample choice to suit all tastes including special requirements and needs. A great atmosphere too, not stuffy , very warm and welcoming. We did not eat in the hotel restaurants in the evening mainly because we wanted sea food which they do not really serve. Our room was of a good size with dressing gowns and slippers with many little bottles etc. We loved the bath with the lion's head tap. The room was warm which we appreciated as it is unduly cold for the time of year in the evenings. We used the pool and the sauna, steamroom, etc. Drinks were comparable to all hotels of this class. We prefer this hotel to the sister Normandy. It feels larger, grander and more open. Within easy walking distance to the sea front promenade and to restaurants. Its great for everyone.

Room Tip: Try to keep away from the lift areas, although they are quiet sometimes it felt like we heard furnit...

This is a large, beautiful hotel about a block back from the English Channel. Close by are the beaches of Normandie and the American Cemetery. The rooms are very nice and comfortable. The pool area is perfect and there are 2 restaurants, one a 5 star Michlen. The breakfast is nice too. The town of Deauville is just a short walk of about 3 blocks where there are ample shops and restaurants. There is a large casino right next to the hotel.

The Royal is obviously less famous than its brother "Normandy", probably because of its size as a 7 floor building standing a few steps from the Deauville beach, located one block from the casino, and 3 minutes walk from the center of Deauville. However the Inside is pleasant. The lobby is nice, with furnitures in red velvet, which gives a feeling of comfort, a touch of modernity balancing with the original 1913 structure. There is a valet parking taking charge of your luggage and parking the car either on the entrance side - obviously for luxury cars - or in front of the hotel on a private parking lot facing the ocean. Parking fee is 15€, which i consider undue for such a hotel category. The clerck at the reception pleasantly showed me the hotel to my room. In the floor lobby, decoration is sober and pleasant, in red and gold fabrics. I was upgraded to junior suit, as a LHW member: Dressing, small living room, bedroom, bathroom and separate toilets, which is really nice. The decoration of the suite was sober, in almond green velvet. Bathroom is clean, bathtub, shower.
Breakfast room is also the dining room, and due to the number of rooms of the hotel, it may be very crowded at peak hours, and tables are somehow close to each others. Buffet breakfast is good, ham, local cheese, yogourts, fresh fruits, fresh fruit juice (orange & grapefruit), scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, tomatoes., smoked salmon, lots of breads and pastries (croissants, pains au chocolat).... cereals.
Globally the personnel is very pleasant greeting you with a hello in the morning, asking you if you had a good night, which for me is a friendly way to make feel comfortable.
The gym is somehow small but rather well equiped. I would say that a room to rest after the gym would be nice to have.

Room Tip: Sea view are oriented North. West side have partial see view. One general remark, which is valid for...

Dear Luke393,

Thank your for your comments about your stay at the Royal Barrière. I am pleased that you appreciate the lobby, we refurbished it less than 2years ago and tried to bring a touch of modernity without loosing sight of our history.

I am also pleased that you enjoyed our breakfast offer. And I was delighted that you noted the friendliness of our staff and that they made you feel comfortable.

Regarding the gym both the men and women area have got a room to rest with a waterbed and dark light.

I hope to welcome you again in Deauville.

I stayed here for a business trip and stayed 3 nights in the hotel. I was impressed by the look and feel when entering the hotel. There was an issue with the room, we were supposed to arrive only the next day, but it was fixed within 5 minutes. The valet parking is a plus, and the luggages was transferred to our room in no time.
The room was very spacious, but very warm. It was too warm to be pleasant, so we lowered the heating and opened the windows. The bathroom was very nice, but the bath tub really needs to be replaced. It was in a really bad state. But the closets in the room were very spacious and that was a plus.
The bar was a very nice place to relax and enjoy a drink or a bite. The pool looked very attractive, but I did not have the time to use it. The breakfast was really varied, with all kinds of meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables, coffee, tea, bread, ...
The staff was very friendly and attentive, I sometimes felt like a little princess. The checkout went smoothly and you could check your expenses on the TV in your room.
The hotel is nicely located in front of the beach and near the shops. And although the hotel has numerous rooms, the room itself was very quiet.
If you want to experience some old fashioned grandeur, then you are on the right spot. After all, I really enjoyed the stay.

Dear Wiebkep,

I am pleased that you did not let some other reviews stop you from staying at the Royal Barrière, and even more pleased that you thoroughly enjoyed your stay.

We are aware that most of our rooms need a good refurbishment. We are currently redecorating and refurbishing a few rooms as "test-rooms" for our next campain of refurbihing. The public area were done last year and I am very pleased that you liked the lightning as we took great care of it to give a warm and cosy atmosphere to the lobby.

I already shared your comment about the quality of service with my team, as it is our greatest asset and pride.

Hoping to welcome you again in Deauville soon.

Having read some of the previous reviews, I was expecting the Royal Barriere to be somewhat lacking the 5 stars it boasts. It's true that the room could have done with a bit of a refurbishment, especially the bath, but I was pleasantly surprised overall. The main lobby and restaruant are beautiful with high ceilings and great lighting. The service was impeccable and there was nothing that could have been done better. We took bikes out for the day from the hotel and also had a late check out. Perfectly located with lovely sea views.

Great hotel in one of the most beautiful seaside villages. Superb location with great views of the beach. Its a classical hotel with some "fatigue ", which one can also define as "grandeur"..
Public areas are great, spacious and welcoming. Big issue is that this hotel can't cope with large groups of people. Checkin way too long. Endless wait for elevators and to get breakfast you have to wait in line...

Dear Baba1956

Thank you for your feedback on your stay at the Royal Barrière.
I was pleased to learn that you enjoyed Deauville. But I was sadened to read that you had to queue up for some of the hotel services, especially the breakfast.
Your stay took place during the asian film festival and on that sunday an unusualy large part of our guests had breakfast in the main restaurant, with very little room service, moreover most of them came down at 10.00 am and we had to face a much larger intake than usual.

My F&B manager and his team are sorry for the inconvenience and asked me to pass you on their apologies.

I hope that this will not prevent you from coming back to Deauville and the Royal Barrière.
