“Does the job.”

If you are looking for a cheap, clean, good quality hotel in Caen- This is it.
The hotel is currently undergoing renovations and i got given a new room which was absolutely huge, clean and great value for money!
The area is not the best, but that is what you get in any city in the world when you stay opposite a train station. Yet the staff were all friendly and breakfast was good value too as it was buffet style and you could eat as much as you wanted. Wi fi also very good connection from room and free.
If you are looking for a base to explore Caen or nearby towns, i would definitely recommend this hotel.

We were very happy to spend a night at the Etap at the Gare in Caen. Reception were friendly, rates were cheap, rooms were spotless, water was hot, beds were comfortable, and there were restaurants and pubs (and local night-life) in plenty within minutes. We found secure long-stay parking accessed by the underpass at the station (8 euros for 24 hours). The best was breakfast: the best muesli I have ever eaten, fresh baguettes, cheese, apple sauce, honey, yoghourt, tea, coffee, chocolate - better than Camanile IMO. Would we go back? With pleasure.

Although there is free Wifi in the charm-free dining area, you can add 10 Euro to the price if you want Wifi in the room. Whereas for a 15 minute walk up av. du 6 Juin, into a nicer part of town you can have free Wifi and therefore pay less and not be a) smelling garbage through the open window; b) giving a peep show to the neighbors (no curtains); c) hot (no air conditioning and see a); c) treated to the display of the local prostitutes, pimps, and drunks congregating on the street and adjacent bars; d) deprived of the ability to easily pop into nice restaurants and stores (see c).

Ok, I know that budget hotels near train stations often aren't the nicest. And to be fair, Etap Hotel was very reasonably-priced and a convenient location for train travel. Another reviewer said "you get what you pay for", which is true...but at 47Euros I was still hoping for more than a mattress with pee stains on the cover, and a spoon sticking out of the bathroom wall in place of a towel hook. It's probably best if I just try to forget the whole experience.

I stayed at the Etap for 2 nights a part of a bus tour.

Location was great with trams, trains, buses & taxis all at the door. However it was only a 10minute, very pleasant stroll into the centre of town.

Included breakfast was plentiful and sasitfiying however the breakfast room was quite small and basic.

Beds were comfy enough however the previous night I'd slept on the ferry crossing from the UK so I think anything would have been a welcomed comfort. They are a double with a small single overhead in a bunkbed setup.

Bathroom didn't have hot water either night and the staff were neither shocked or able to help (maybe a regular occurence). There was hot water both mornings. The basin & mirror are located outside the bathroom.

As my heading said "you get what you pay for".

My friend and I decided on a whim to stay a night in Caen and stopped at this hotel because it was right next to the train station which made it really easy to leave the next day and we didn't want to waste a lot of time looking around for a room. It is also right next to a tram stop so it was easy to get into town if you didn't want to walk. The room was very cheap so that was great. It looked just like the one in the candid traveler photos. Nothing to write home about but it was clean and the television worked. The guy at the front desk was really nice. It certainly isn't a pretty hotel or for anyone looking for a romantic trip, but if you are just travelling cheap it works out fine.
