This is a wonderful place to go and visit, it is well presented and interesting. I learned alot about the events during the war here and also a cold insight in to the differences between East & West in the cold war exhibit. Take a good large picnic and eat outside in the gardens, go with friends and make a day of it, it is not all doom and gloom, it makes you realise how things could have gone - ENJOY

This is a great, comprehensive museum in the heart of Normandy. Many good exhibits and short films and a really great cafeteria for those who don't want to waste time at a typical French cafe (where lunch might take 2 hours). The souvenir shop is excellent and within a 2 hour period, one can get a full education on the events leading up to WW2 and the Normandy invasions.

I had wanted to visit this for a while, so drove on over whilst in Caen. It looks excellent and imposing from the outside, and you walk inside into a huge and vibrant atrium, with the promise of seeing sights. It's only when you try and access the below-ground areas (ie the museum) that you discover there are gates barring entry, and only when you scout around do you notice the "tickets" booth at the rear of the building. It's almost as if they've hidden it away.
When you go to check out prices, it turns out it's a whopping €18 a person ($24 or £16). Having looking at the contents of the memorial, it's certainly not worth that much - especially considering it's the same price as the Palais de Versailles. So that's as far as I got. I chose to drive the 17km up to the coast and actually look at the (free) historical buildings all along the coast.
All in all impressive to look at, but disappointing when you factor in the price.

The museum was a short ride on n2 bus line from our hotel. I decided to go to museum to prepare myself for my American Beach tours the next day and it did a great job. That being said, it was much more comprehensive then I originally anticipated. The museum started at the end of WW1 and went through the cold war. I spent about 3 hours at the museum but could have easily spent double that time. The museum contains more placards/photos/etc. then actual artifacts. My main complaint was the cost, 19 euros per person. It should have been half the cost!

We thought this was a museum focused on the D-Day invasion. Instead it was a fascinating explanation of the history of events leading up to and including World II, culminating in D-Day through the end of the war. Different from what I expected, but really interesting and very well done. We did not do the cold war section as we ran out of time.
