It was amazing to walk around this area that has seen wars over the centuries and is still there for us to appreciate.

Visited the castle in Caen central. Was a nice change from the WWII history . Large grounds with
some different museums inside the walls. Spent between 1-2 hours there. No guided tours .Let
me rephrase my first statement. The castle itself has it's on piece of WWII history. I would recommend a walk around this magnificent castle perched up on the hill overlooking Caen

We spent about 2 hours walking around the Chateau, including a 30 minutes' visit the the Norman Museum. The fortress is very interesting, and you get excited to know that they are still finding remains and excavating! You can just imagine what it was like in, say, the 12th century. The weather was nice, so we went up on the wall. Some parts (right at the entrance) are only reachable by stairs, but there are others (near William the Conqueror's palace ruins) that are reachable by elevator. Free of charge, and many locals use the fortress as a shortcut to their destinations. We only visited the Norman Museum, but you can also visit the Beaux Arts museum. There is also a chapel within the fortress but it was closed when we visited.

What a superb castle. We spent 2 hours walking through it and enjoyed every minute of it. So much history and you will learn a lot from just enjoying the great buildings (some very old indeed) and also marvel at the excellent panoramic view of the town. They sure knew how to pick their sites in those days. Location etc etc :)

Probably the main thing to see in Caen, but surprisingly big even without going into the arts galleries etc dotted among the old ruins. The exhibits are generally well labelled to give you a good sense of English and French history, and the walls and ramparts give good views out over Caen.
