My husband and I explored the castle early morning and it was so much fun. It is right in the center of the city and it is a really lively place all throughout the day and night. The Museum Beaux-Arts was repurposed within the walls of the castle and the castle areas are free to explore. We loved climbing up to the top of the castle's walls. The views were great. You could see where the steps were worn and imagine people stepping on those steps centuries ago.

Great views from the walls on top of the hill. Several museums inside the castle. Castle is free and open at night some evenings.

We visited Caen as part of a recent trip to France. The Chateau is located near shopping areas and is well worth a visit. You can walk along the castle walls to see some spectacular views and some recent work seemed to have been done to create a good walkway up to the entrance.
We did feel that more information would have been useful - in the form of signs or leaflets - to give you a better feel for the history of the place. There are a few signs on the hill the Chateau sits on (which makes an excellent picnic spot on a sunny day) but there didn't seem to be much within the walls.
We really enjoyed having a look around the site, definitely worth a visit if you are visiting the town.

This site of a castle build by William the Conqueror is amazing. There are multiple ramparts/castle walls to clamber over, arrow slit holes to peer out of, amazing views of the city, a 12th century building to gape over, and a palpable sense of history. I wish there were more labels or a guidebook to purchase, but even without those aids, the site has such a palpable sense of history, that it is well worth the time.

Note that to see all of it, you need to be able to climb up and down uneven stairs often without benefit of handrails or guardrails.

Coming from Australia we found France amazing with all the history and old buildings, how they built these things so long ago amazes us. Walking in the footsteps of William the Conqueror is a humbling experience. This was our first stop after Paris and we went on to bigger and older but it was the start of amazing sightseeing, you don't need a lot of time to explore but worth the effort.
