“A Wonderful stay !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2014

My wife and I escaped from the kids for a night and booked The Tardif the day before and booked a Junior Suite for a small suplement.

We arrived before reception was open (there is no permanent reception, the proprietor greets guests between certain times) and wandered around Bayeux for the afternoon. On returning we were greeted by Anthony who showed us through the house to our suite before parking our car for us in the grounds. The house and our room were beautifully decorated with period-style furniture giving the impression of staying in a stately home (but with modern facilities and plumbing !).

Anthony had already prepared a guide to the best eating places in the town and helped us choose a perfect restaurant. Nothing was too much trouble for him.

Breakfast was typically French and the food was of a very high standard and served in the period dining room.

The proprietor has furnished the hotel to a very high standard which made the stay unforgettable but this is NOT a typical "hotel" and I would say is not suitable for children. Other guests have commented on Anthony's attitude but he takes great pride in his guest house (as it is advertised) and we found him charming and helpful.

Le Tardif is a perfect place to enjoy a romantic and very different stay in Bayeux.

Room Tip: We upgraded to a Junior Suite and found it was large, light and overlooked the gardens to the front...

The Hotel Tardif Noble Guest House is a lovely old villa in the heart of Bayeux. It is clean and and well maintained. The location is superb for exploring Bayeux and Bayeux is a great home- base for exploring Normandy.

Before you book however - I recommend you read the low rated reviews as well as the glowing reviews.

My friend and I had a similar experience with the host as related in the other low rated reviews.

Up until that morning's heated exchange our host was very friendly and accommodating - meeting us warmly even though we arrived late.

But the next morning when my fellow traveler was looking for coffee / hot water to make instant coffee before breakfast was being served - the host said he was insulted and it became a scene.

There are no kettles in the rooms and he made a point of saying many times that we were guests in a private home. (?) The word 'hotel' is in the name - and we paid for our rooms.

He offered for us to leave - but we decided to stay because re-packing and finding a new place that morning would have ruined our previously scheduled tour that was starting w/in the half hour of the incident.

What made it even more uncomfortable for me was that in the evening when I went to let him know we would not be at the next breakfast - the host continued to berate my friend to me - instead of letting it go at the least - or acknowledging a mis-understanding in phraseology at best - which we had done that morning and I did again and apologized for. (She had used the phrase: "This isn't going to work for me.")

Basically I felt like I was in a scene from Fawlty Towers it was so ridiculous- looking back now - it is funny - but at the time it was very uncomfortable and it really cast a shadow over our otherwise wonderful time in Normandy.

We needed a place to stay in Bayeux and this little B&B could not have been better. We had a large room that was well furnished and very comfortable. Anthony, and his wonderful dog Atlas were great. Anthony provided us with a great restaurant recommendation. And, even made sure that we were up early for our Normandy tour. Breakfast was served in a lovely dining room and had everything you would want - coffee, tea, fruits, meats, cheeses, pastries. The price was perfect. I definitely will stay again if I ever make it back to Bayeux.

Bonjour Ann,

Thank you for your nice words. It's very touching. I'm happy you and your friend stayed here with me. And i hope we will have the opportunity of meeting again. Anyway, there is so much left for you to discover in Normandy that i know you will be back one day.

Sincerely,

Anthony VOIDIE

We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Tardif in Bayeux very much. It is a lovely venue. Anthony, the proprietor, couldn't have been more gracious. It was the perfect place to come back to after long days of touring the battlefields of Normandy, as well as walking around Bayeux. We would go back in a minute.

My family was just amazed when they saw Hotel Tardif. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment and had a beautiful view of the garden. 1 room had a queen size bed and the other had a pair of twin beds. The rooms were spacious and we were all very comfortable. We highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is about 10 minutes away from the train station and is an easy walk.

The Hotel Tardif was just what we needed while journeying around Normandy. It was a beautiful chateau hidden right in the middle of Bayeux. The home was comfortable, quiet and elegant. Anthony the host was really helpful and friendly - the breakfast was everything you would need (and he even offered to make us french toast!) The rooms were a little dated and 'antique', but not uncomfortable at all...the decor was quite charming. The grounds were simply beautiful, and our car was locked within the gates overnight for security and peace of mind. We highly recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing experience.

My friends and I chose the Hotel Tardif on the basis of the hotel's website and tripadvisor reviews, both of which can still be a bit of a gamble. This gamble paid off. The Tardif is exactly as the website photos look. Elegant, spacious, beautifully decorated, serene. Our room for seven nights was plenty spacious for three friends, with a beautifully appointed bath, writing desk, table and chairs, and comfortable beds. Anthony, the proprietor, has the 18th century mansion furnished in beautiful antiques and is a most hospitable host. We found him to be gracious and helpful in every way. Family style breakfast in the large dining room with croissants, baguettes, fruit, yogurt, cereal, juice, coffee, hot chocolate or tea and home made breakfast breads and fruit tarts is the perfect way to begin each day. The Tardif was perfectly located to use as a home base for the D-Day beaches, San Malo, Mont St. Michel, and other sights in Normandy. Highly recommend.
