Owner description: The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German. The BAYEUX MEMORIAL stands opposite the cemetery and bears the names of more than 1,800 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in Normandy itself, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.

“Worth the visit”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

We visited the American Cemetery earlier in the day, and it was immaculate of course. This cemetery was different, and very sobering as well. There were many graves and tombs from different soldiers of many countries. There were many from Europe and Canada, Italy, France, even Germany. There were a number of Arabic and Jewish as well. Beautiful and very interesting to see them all side by side.

“Impressive”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

We visited the cemetry at the end of a day during which we visited different sites related to June 6th landing in the World War II. In that way it was a strong reminder that all of the 'glory' that we saw during the day came at a very high price.

“A sobering visit...”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

Stopped here on our first day in Bayeux as the weather was fine.

Very sobering to walk amongst the lines of graves to see the very young ages of the soldiers killed in combat and the messages inscribed on the headstones from their families. The cemetery is perfectly maintained and directly across the road from the Normandy War Museum.

“Glad that we decided to stop and visit. It was enlightening and emotional.”

Quite different from the American cemetery and the German cemetery. I think the prospective is different. The young ages of the soldiers really saddened me.

“Humbling”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

We have waited until the kids were old enough to bring them here. It was amazingly interesting and very emotional. Well worth the visit especially for stage 2 & 3 children,
