This small cemetery holds the graves of British and German soldiers who fell near Bayeux. It is very moving and personal because many headstones reflected not only the name, age, rank, unit served, but personal references provided by the families of the fallen. Inscriptions were sometimes a favorite quote or biblical reference. In a few cases, photos were attached. The cemetery is very well maintained and many of the headstones were surrounded by beautiful flowers.

My only disappointment was that they included the graves of fallen German soldiers in this same cemetery, although on a separate site. I am not that open minded. They were the ones who killed those brave soldiers that gave their lives to liberate Europe.

Solemn yet beautiful. Visited over Remembrance weekend, graves were well kept and atmosphere was sad.

An interesting contrast with the American cemetery in Normandy as headstones often included quotes from family members which brought out another level of emotion. Occasional photos and gardens accompanied some of the headstones. And it was interesting to see at least one set of conjoined headstones.

This is just not a cemetery for British fallen but for soldiers of many nations, including German, who gave their lives during the struggle for Normandy. Going through the gravestones shows what a terrible cost war can be. Sobering when you see 8 - 10 gravestones from the same unit all killed on the same day.

A visit to the war cemetary just puts into perspective the sheer scale and horror of these conflicts. We should never forget what the brave generations who went before sacrificed for us. If you've never visited, consider it now.

I would encourage you to visit the British War Cemetery in Bayeaux, a short walk from the nearby 'Museum of the Battle of Normandy'.
It is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices that so many made to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. This small cemetery is the final resting spot for British and German soldiers who fell near Bayeux. I expected to see only British graves, but the presence of so many Germans kind of surprised me. This is a quiet place to honor those who lost their lives in WWII.

I would encourage people to visit the British War Cemetery in Bayeaux. It is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices that so many made to liberate Europe from Nazi Germany. Of interest is that the British markers contain messages from loved ones, reminding us that service members were also members of families that grieve the loss of their young men who gave their all.

This cemetery for the British soldiers killed during the invasion of Normandy is less well known than the American cemetery but should be seen first for two reasons. First, as large as it is, it helps to put the American cemetery in perspective. Second, the tombstones include the ages of the deceased (unlike the American cemetery), from which one begins to grasp how young most of the soldiers were.
