Owner description: The town of Bayeux, in Normandy, lies 30 kilometres north-west of Caen. Bayeux War Cemetery is situated in the south-western outskirts of the town on the by-pass (D5), which is named Boulevard Fabian Ware. On the opposite side of the road stands the Bayeux Memorial. BAYEUX WAR CEMETERY, which was completed in 1952, contains 4,144 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 338 of them unidentified. There are also over 500 war graves of other nationalities, the majority German. The BAYEUX MEMORIAL stands opposite the cemetery and bears the names of more than 1,800 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died in the early stages of the campaign and have no known grave. They died during the landings in Normandy, during the intense fighting in Normandy itself, and during the advance to the River Seine in August.

Having been to the American Cemetery and memorial at Courselles sur mer the day before this was very different, but equally if not more moving. The simplicity and scale of the cemetery and the fact each grave tells a story make this a breathtaking place and a place every British visitor to Bayeux must see.

After a bit of extra walking via the station, we found the British and Commonwealth cemetery at Bayeux. It is beautifully maintained and set out around the main monuments. Each grave is marked with the serviceman's regimental emblem so it is easy to pick out those you are looking for. Immediately across the road is another memorial. At the right hand end, there is a small bronze door which when you open it, contains a memorial book for you to write something. There are also lists of soldiers and airmen in two booklets. I was just curious as to what was behind the little door and might easily have missed the opportunity to write something.

I couldn't walk around here with my travel companions. I had to go off by myself and think about the brave men remebered here. Intersting to also see lost German soldiers.

I was taken here by Marion from the Bayeux Tourist Office on a private trip to Bayeux and this visit was very moving. In fact just opposite is another war cemetary for journalists from all over the world! Again very moving.
