“Lovely Hotel - stay, you won't regret it.”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

We were a group of 6 touring the Normandy Beaches and looking for somewhere to stay for 1 night in Bayeux that was not too expensive. We found it in this hotel. It was a lovely hotel. We had 3 rooms between us. They were all large, modern, clean and comfortable, with a contemporary theme. We couldn't have been more pleased! We requested 1 of our rooms to be on the ground floor as one of us couldn't do stairs. They gave us 1 room on the ground floor, and the other 2 rooms were right up 2 sets of stairs. We were all close together. We found ourselves right in the center of the city, but there was no noise. It was an easy walk to find a restaurant for dinner, and to do a little shopping and sightseeing in the city. The room was large by European standards and the bath was clean with great towels. The bed was comfortable, and breakfast was great. I would definitely stay here again.

We were not sure what to expect from this hotel but assumed with it being rated as #3 in Bayeux on Trip Advisor it would not be bad.

We were not surprise to find that the hotel had outstanding service! When we checked in they carried our bags up to the top floor to our room (no elevator but even my old knees were able to handle it!) without us asking.

The room was comfortable and roomy for the 2 of us. It had a shower and sink in one bathroom and a sink and toilet in the other which worked out great for both of us to get ready for those early morning D-Day tours!

Breakfast buffet was good with hard boiled eggs (would love to see some scrambled or fried eggs offered..hint!), yogurt, breads, cereals and fruits.

The restaurant was always crowded for dinner so get there early. After eating there we knew why it was crowded. The food was fantastic and the service the best we had in Bayeux. Please try the Bayeux Cider as it is wonderful and a real treat. We asked 2 locals where they liked to eat and both said the Reine Mathilde was their favorite.

The location being practically across the street from the cathedral and less than 3 minutes walk from the tapestry museum was a welcome plus for staying here. Everything in town was within EASY walking distance.

Let me mention that the hotel does not have air conditioning. Is that an issue? Well not really. Our stay from 7/22-7/26 was rather warm during the day but we were gone touring the area so it was not an issue. At night the temps cool down to the low 60's and even the 50's so just open the window and enjoy the cool weather as you cover up in the warm duvet.

We were told when we were checking out that air conditioning is in the future (next year!) for the hotel. Again it was not an issue for us at all so do NOT let the lack of A/C keep you from staying here!

We went on to Paris from Bayeux and kept saying we would rather be back in Bayeux at the Reine Mathilde! It really felt like a home away from home.

We had 2 rooms here. It is a good value and we definitely recommend it. Our only issue (and this was the same at every hotel we encountered in Europe for our month long vacation...so I am not deducting points as it is not the hotels issue) is that we were hot. We toured Europe in July, and it was cool when we were headed there, but quickly headed into the 80-90's (Munich reach 98)...and with no a/c, it is quite uncomfortable. We would open the windows at night as the night air is cool, but then you get street noises (nothing like a motorcycle whipping down the road on the cobble stones...sounds are magnified...but we still slept good despite the heat and noise.) We were surprised that there were no bugs that came in the windows. It was pleasant once the night air cooled.

After the third hot town/hotel, we learned to ask for a fan...and that made the rooms so much better. Not sure why we didn't think of that before..

Of our two rooms, one was very modern, but "hotter" due to the side of the building it was on. Our other room was not as modern, but it was comfortable. The window looked out onto the roof of the kitchen, so with the window open you could hear the kitchen staff talking, pots and pans shuffling, and also the smell of food cooking. But it was much cooler than the other room.

We enjoyed the stay, rooms were clean and comfortable. Any other time of the year it would be fabulous weather, it is just stuffy indoors when it is warm outside.

We ate the breakfast the first day, but decided against it on the other days. Breakfast consisted of cereal, bread, boiled eggs, fruit.

The hotel restaurant has great food and drinks. We tried food all over town, but the prices and quality won out at the hotel restaurant so we ate there on several occasions. The burger was delicious, and we are from Texas where we are proud of our hamburgers. It was juicy, tasty, and we chose the peppercorn sauce. Extremely good! Put it with some frites and a cold beer, and you have a terrific meal!

Location of the hotel is premier. Right on the river, right by the Tapestry and the cathedral...right by the town center, and a laundromat at the end of the street...down 2 blocks.

Don't hesitate to select this hotel...but just watch the weather when you head to Europe and be prepared for summer heat. Not bad outside, but stores, trains, etc were all hot.

The Hotel Reine Mathilde is within walking distance of the train station (10min), the Tapestry, the cathedral, and many restaurants. The attached restaurant is good as well. We even found something for our picky 13 year old son to eat. Breakfast is a little pricey, so we bought croissants from a boulangerie down the street, then had coffee downstairs. The hotel is clean, we felt safe, and the staff was very friendly. Our rooms were on the street side, so there was some street noise, but only until about 11pm. The rest of the night was quiet. We enjoyed walking around town and found a nice park. Bayeux is just a very lovely town. We toured the DDay sights with DDay Guided Tours, which was absolutely awesome. Matthias picked us up from the hotel and was a wonderful tour guide for the kids.

This is a great hotel. I planned a 5 night tour thru northern France for my husband and I and my sister and BIL, so I hoped this would be a comfortable place and everyone would enjoy it. Score! My sister's comfort double room was great, they had a nice view of the little creek behind the hotel. Due to availability, we stayed in a comfort double in the Annex the first night and a twin room in the main building the second. The Annex was spacious and comfortable (obviously newly renovated), but the twin room was a bit cramped and the beds were too hard for my taste.

The staff was VERY friendly and accommodating and the food was superb! We had lunch and dinner there. Breakfast was just fine...soft boiled eggs, breads, jam, yogurt, coffee and juice. There are plenty of things to see in Bayeux, so this was a great place to come back to after a day touring the D-Day sites. It gave us more options than if we were to stay at a secluded Chateau....

Room Tip: We LOVED the Annex so if you can get a room there, do it. Well worth the cost to get a comfort room...

If we had a different room, I am sure that my rating would have been much, much more positive. However, we were in a first floor room in the annex, and there was an overwhelming smell of must or mildew or something. I can only presume that the carpet was flooded and they didn't effectively clean it up. We were only there for one night and weren't in the room much, so I didn't complain or ask to be moved. But, we would have needed to be moved if we were staying another night. The annex is next to a canal, which is very nice looking and attractive, but it must be causing some water problems for the ground floor of the annex.

Other than our smelly room, the hotel is very charming, centrally located, and the staff were welcoming upon check in. We ate at the restaurant and all enjoyed our meal in the nice outdoor setting.
