“Wonderful hotel and restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

We loved our stay in Bayeux--the town was delightful and our accomodations at Hotel Reine Matilde were excellent. Our room was clean and well-appointed. The service was excellent at the hotel and in the restaurant. Our room was compact but comfortable; we were located in a double room on the front street side and the noise from the street made it a little difficult to keep the window open at night. If we return (and we certainly hope to), we would ask for a room in the back of the hotel (if you need the windows open) or in the annex. Dinners at the accompanying restaurant were great, and there was a wonderful bakery within a five minute walk if you want to grab something quick "for the road."
We walked with our luggage from the train station and it was about a ten minute hike but worked fine; you can take a taxi from the train station as well. We would definitely recommend the town of Bayeux, this hotel and their restaurant, Le Garde Manger!

We arrived on a Sunday evening by train from Paris, and walked (with backpack) from the Bayeux train station to the hotel in about 20 minutes. Most shops were closed when we arrived after 6pm that day.

We were given room #4, which had 2 single beds. Room was clean and modern, but building was obviously a lot older, which was expected. Being that our room was right above the restaurant, there was quite a bit of noise and clattering until the restaurant closes past 10 pm. But the view of the Cathedral from our room at night was awesome. With the windows closed, there wasn't much noise, but for light sleepers, I would suggest asking for a room away from the restaurant.

I believe most of the local tour pickups are right at the back of the hotel, so this is definitely a convenient location. Hotel staff spoke English, and were pleasantly friendly. Would highly recommend.

Booked a room in the annex and it exceeded expectations. Huge room with comfortable bed. Large bathroom with great shower. Warm greeting from reception, helpful tips with parking, and they know their stuff. Dinner in the restaurant was nice and convenient. Too chilly to enjoy the patio. (Stuck indoors with obnoxious young American co-eds - Lord, help us all....) Breakfast was ample and delicious. Overall, excellent value for money, would stay here next time, in the annex and hopefully, dine on the patio. Laudromat a block or two away opens at 7 am. Grocery store around the corner. Bayeux draws a lot of tourists and they were in abundance. Lovely city to explore and an easy drive to Omaha Beach.

Room Tip: Stay in the annex!

THE STAR RATING AT THIS HOTEL MUST BE WRONG. Hotel Reine Mathilde gave us 3+ star accommodation, service and food. My group of 10 family and friends took a leadership/educational trip to France and England, and this was by far the best and most reliable place we stayed at. Immeditately as we entered we were greeted with nearly perfect English. Although there is no elevator, the rooms look almost brand new, and the showers are large and very clean. Huge windows, perfect for letting the breeze in at night. The restaurant, Le Garde Manger is also INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend the Poulet (a chicken, ham, mushroom, chive mixture in a wonderful cream sauce) and any of the various apple desserts. Great patio, and truly the best location in the town of Bayeux. Next door to the tapestry, Cathedral, and one block from the central street in town. You're crazy if you stay anywhere else in town!!

Merci beaucoup pour le service incroyable, Reine Mathilde!!

We stayed here for one night in the annex (a separate building around the corner). The room was clean, fairly large for a European room, and newly renovated. The staff was incredibly helpful, friendly, accommodating, and hospitable. The location cannot be beat -- it is steps from the cathedral, the Tapestry museum, and central to many restaurants and shops, including the tourism/information center. We took the train in from Paris, and we were able to walk to the hotel (with backpacks only, no luggage)-- very close to everything you need. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We requested a "comfort" room - a queen size bed. We were also in the "annex" w...

We really enjoyed our 4 nights at the quaint Reine Mathilde. The location of the hotel is excellent for walking anywhere in the town, and Bayeux is a very good location for touring WWII sites. Having a free parking lot just down the street was appreciated, as parking in Bayeux is difficult. The hotel has a full restaurant, offering a nice breakfast buffet for additional cost, and very good dinners. ..delicious chocolate crepe for dessert! The nice patio was a popular gathering place for drinks or dinner. Our room #4 was quite small with little storage space (not ideal if you are traveling with 2 large suitcases as we did; (only place to put them was standing on end in the closet) and almost no space to move around the room. It was not a room where we would want to spend time during the day (2 small straight back chairs) but that was never an issue as we were sightseeing non-stop. The room and bath were very clean The shower was quite small but there was good water pressure in the shower which is more important to us than the space.
We especially appreciated the friendly, helpful staff. They were always smiling and eager to help make our stay comfortable, provide advice about the town, or help in any way. The lady who makes up the room was super nice, and upon my request , immediately, and with a nice smile, removed the quilt from the duvet so that it was not so heavy. We really enjoyed having windows open for a lovely view of the Cathedral and fresh air during the night. All in all, a very nice stay and we would definitely stay there again in the future (we would just travel with smaller suitcases!)

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights during our two week trip of France. Of all the rooms we stayed in (8), this one was by far the lowest on the totem pole. The bed was probably a full size, when all other hotels at least had a double sized bed or bigger when we requested it. The room size itself was beyond small, which I know can be common for France, but this was the worst we saw on our trip. Oher than that, it has a great location, a nice breakfast and super nice staff. Try and ask for a bigger room if you can!
