Hotel Reine Mathilde

Certificate of Excellence

We really enjoyed our 4 nights at the quaint Reine Mathilde. The location of the hotel is excellent for walking anywhere in the town, and Bayeux is a very good location for touring WWII sites. Having a free parking lot just down the street was appreciated, as parking in Bayeux is difficult. The hotel has a full restaurant, offering a nice breakfast buffet for additional cost, and very good dinners. ..delicious chocolate crepe for dessert! The nice patio was a popular gathering place for drinks or dinner. Our room #4 was quite small with little storage space (not ideal if you are traveling with 2 large suitcases as we did; (only place to put them was standing on end in the closet) and almost no space to move around the room. It was not a room where we would want to spend time during the day (2 small straight back chairs) but that was never an issue as we were sightseeing non-stop. The room and bath were very clean The shower was quite small but there was good water pressure in the shower which is more important to us than the space.
We especially appreciated the friendly, helpful staff. They were always smiling and eager to help make our stay comfortable, provide advice about the town, or help in any way. The lady who makes up the room was super nice, and upon my request , immediately, and with a nice smile, removed the quilt from the duvet so that it was not so heavy. We really enjoyed having windows open for a lovely view of the Cathedral and fresh air during the night. All in all, a very nice stay and we would definitely stay there again in the future (we would just travel with smaller suitcases!)

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights during our two week trip of France. Of all the rooms we stayed in (8), this one was by far the lowest on the totem pole. The bed was probably a full size, when all other hotels at least had a double sized bed or bigger when we requested it. The room size itself was beyond small, which I know can be common for France, but this was the worst we saw on our trip. Oher than that, it has a great location, a nice breakfast and super nice staff. Try and ask for a bigger room if you can!

This review refers to room 20 of the annex. The annex is tucked around the back of the main hotel, not far at all and all on the level to the main door. We were offered a triple room (2 adults and a toddler) but this was really a quadruple due to ingenious chair beds which were very comfortable.

Service was excellent, friendly and efficient. We were shown to the annex which is an old building which has been sympathetically renovated. The room is modern, minimalist but comfortable. Plenty of room for a toddler to do laps without hindering the unpacking. The bathroom was huge, beautiful rainfall shower and a sink the size of a baby bath! I know, we used it thus :)

The bed was like sleeping on a cloud. So an excellent night was had.

Breakfast was in the attached restaurant and was as expected from hotels in this neck of the woods. Though an extra bonus was the Tea Forte teas, these are my guilty luxury.

The only down side for us was only staying 1 night. Longer next time please.

Stayed for 1 night in Chambre 3. The hotel is on a busy road and free parking is about a 5 minute walk away. Good stopover place for visiting the Bayeux Tapestry and Cathedral. I'm a light sleeper so my room wasn't ideal as it was close to the stairwell and overlooked the al fresco dining and close to the road. Nice restaurant nearby - Normandie. The room was clean and functional - but not for a stay longer than 2 nights.

I shopped around for hotels and found this gem less expensive than the rest and decided to be brave and go for it and so glad we did. Fabulous location in the city of Bayeux near dozens of restaurants and cafes and perfect for the pick up for most Normandy tours. Breakfast wasn't included, but we ate there once and it was enjoyable. We stayed in the newest section the Annex which is roomy and comfy, only real downside is that there is no kettle, which I had read about so was prepared and brought my heating element so all was good. Staff very friendly. Great place ro stay. Just wish the weather had been friendlier to us as we had rain, rain and more rain. But I guess that is the Normandy experience

Room Tip: Pay the little extra for the Annex - called a comfort room as not part of the hotel and I imagine qu...

We stayed here for 2 nights with our family of 4 and had two rooms next door to each other (4 and 5). The rooms, located away from the main street, were clean and nicely decorated. So glad we stayed here as the staff were lovely, location just perfect with lovely outside dining area near the little river where you can enjoy the sun into the evening. The dinners were very good and good value for money, and breakfast was a nice buffet with fresh fruit, yoghurts, coffee, juices, baguettes, croissants, cereals, cake. In the evening, we enjoyed walks around the town which oozes charm (follow the tourist route around town marked in the pavements).

We stayed in the Reine Mathilde recently with three other couples as part of birthday celebrations. We would thoroughly recommend the hotel and the staff - the rooms were in the annexe to the hotel, just the other side of a courtyard, and were very comfortable and modern. Breakfast was good and we had lunch and dinner in the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to look after us. The location was perfect, just over the road from the cathedral and round the corner from the tapestry museum. We could not have picked a better spot. Many, many thanks to everyone for making this a special visit.

Room Tip: We did not see the rooms in the main building but the comfort rooms in the annexe were very good - p...
