“Good Choice in Bayeux”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

We came across this hotel when we stopped for a late lunch (having been turned away from other places in Bayeux as lunch was 'fin' - when will they learn that tourists keep them in business!?).

Anyway, the Reine Mathilde was open and we had a pleasant lunch and enquired about rooms - they had one room left and we booked it at a rate of 95 Euro.

The room was on the top (second) floor in a newly refurbished separate building adjacent to the hotel. It was a lovely large modernised room with a large comfortable bed, good bedlinen and a modern bathroom with excellent shower and all the amenities.

The hotel is in the centre of town and is only a few minutes walk from the Bayeux tapestry and the Cathedral. They have their own free car park 5 minutes walk away but we parked adjacent to the hotel on the meter (which was relatively cheap and no charge at night).

All in all a very comfortable stay and a good choice if you are in Bayeux.

Room Tip: Rooms in the new adjacent building are excellent.

We just returned from a 4 night stay over Easter weekend. The location of the hotel is perfect for touring the local tourist sites, WWII sites, a great view of the Bayeux Cathedral or just walking around the quaint town. Our room was a bit small for myself, husband and toddler but we had a great view of the cathedral and we toured most days so not a big deal. Breakfast was included and although limited, it was perfect to hold you over before you head out for the day. The restaurant menu is very good for lunch/dinner and the food was well prepared. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with our little needs of traveling with a toddler!
The hotel does not have a lift so if walking up/down stairs is difficult for you then I would look at a different hotel. But I would recommend to anyone as it was a great value.

Stay here when you are in bayeux. Great people working here especially Guillaume and Fred. Food was delicious and breakfast buffet was fantastic, especially the coffee. Rooms are typical for Europe. We would stay there again.

In March 2013, we stayed three nights and enjoyed breakfast and supper at Hotel Reine Mathilde. The accommodations were quite comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay. The food in the restaurant was tasty and well prepared! The rates were a bargain. Our room, #5, was clean and comfortable...not spacious. We journeyed to Bayeux for WWII touring and the Hotel Reine Mathilde accommodations suited us very well.

I would give this hotel 3 stars except for the fact that it was a great bargin and the staff was very helpful...nice breakfast and the luxury of sitting downstairs in the bar after a full day of exploring the Normandy coast...a great finish to two great days exploration. Whatever you do, in addition to visitng the WW II sites on the coast...take the time to visit the William the Conqueror Tapestry Museum while you are in town.

The room was clean but had a terrible odor. We could not determine it's origin, whether it was mildew, the river outside the window or something in the carpet. It was really gross. Fortunately, we only slept and showered there and it seemed to dissipate somewhat with the heater on. The bed was comfortable. The room was freshened each day. The window is on the street, so not much natural light unless you want to live exposed to pedestrian traffic. The shower was crazy without a curtain. It was like showering at one end of a small, open room with a drain. My husband and I managed to get water everywhere! They are always so concerned about towel usage and wasting water but this situation was out of control. No way towels weren't going to be changed....they were soaked from wiping up the floor after drying off so you wouldn't kill yourself from a slip and fall! I've heard of accessible showers, but this was ridiculous and actually a tad dangerous. We were in that room because it was on the first floor and without an elevator, luggage can be a problem for us up flights of stairs. The free parking was a short 5 minute walk and we were able to pull the car around to minimize dragging the luggage too far, although we discovered that on our own after already having dragged the luggage too far on cobbled streets! The staff was friendly. The best part of the hotel was location, if you didn't mind parking away. We would't stay here again. We wouldn't eat here again either, but that is another review!

Room Tip: Maybe the rooms are nicer in the main building. We did not look them over. No lift.

The car park is a short five minute walk away and is particularly busy. To get a space it will involve you stalking anyone who is walking to there vehicle. Dwelling is centrally located, lovely rooms, hearty french breakfast, and the restaurant attached can only be described as 'magnific'. No brainer really....
